Singapore, 21 April 2009 – The largest ever contingent of sports utility vehicle (SUV) drivers will be heading off to Kuantan to take The New Paper SUVival Challenge (TNP SUVival Challenge) this Saturday, 25 April 2009. With the number of entries hitting another record high this year, an impressive total of 130 SUVs with 360 participants will go off on a two-day one-night road trip filled with challenges.
Due to the overwhelming response, registration had to close earlier than planned. In order not to disappoint the enthusiastic readers, organisers at The New Paper decided to allow 130 cars to go on the expedition this year, 10 more than the maximum number of cars targetted. There is a limit of four people per team per vehicle.
TNP took participants to destinations like Desaru, Malacca, Port Dickson and Bukit Tinggi, Pahang in the last three expeditions. This year, TNP has planned some exciting games and off-road challenges for the participants en route to Kuantan. The drivers will also be able to watch professional drivers show off their prowess with daring off-road driving demonstrations.
Challengers will be staying at the Swiss Garden Resort in Kuantan, located along the pristine shoreline of the east coast of Malaysia.
Over $20,000 worth of cash and prizes will be given away, including prizes for two winners of the Best Decorated SUV competition.
The event will be flagged off at 6am from Raffles Marina and the Challenge will officially begin once the SUVs have crossed the immigration at the Second Link. Drivers will have to hunt for answers to encrypted clues and take on challenges planted at four different checkpoints. The team with the highest points after completing the challenges will be the winner.
The top challenge winner will win a cash prize of $2,500 and a Pioneer in-car entertainment DVD unit with touch screen panel worth $1,000. The two best decorated SUVs will each get a Holux GPS navigation device and $250 worth of shopping vouchers.
Mr Danny Yeo, Assistant Vice-President, Product Branding & Promotions of SPH's Marketing Division, said: "The SUVival Challenge has built up a reputation for itself over the years and an ever growing fan base. It has a unique appeal to SUV drivers because they don't get the chance to drive in rough off-road terrain in Singapore."
East Gear, the distributor of Holux GPS navigation device, and Champion Motors, distributor of Suzuki cars, are the main sponsors of the TNP SUVival Challenge. Co-sponsors include Pioneer and YHI Yokohama. SPH's AsiaOne portal is the online partner and Radio 91.3FM is the event's supporting radio station.
Your reporter and photographer/video crew are invited to cover the flag-off.
