President S R Nathan celebrates ”The New Paper Be Yourself Day” with students of West Spring Secondary School

Singapore, 27 August 2008 – This year, a total of 105 schools will celebrate The New Paper Be Yourself Day (TNP Be Yourself Day). Students from these schools will be raising funds for the less fortunate while expressing their individuality and creativity in a fun and enjoyable way. The number of participating schools has grown from just 24 schools in 2002 when the event was first started, to more than 100 schools in the last two years.

TNP Be Yourself Day is a day where students do not wear their school uniforms. Instead, they are free to dress creatively and in ways which best express their individual personalities. It is also an occasion when teachers and principals get to see their students from a different perspective.

While enjoying the freedom to dress as they like, students are also encouraged to think of the less fortunate and make a donation to the President’s Challenge, an annual charity event that benefits 31 charities. This is the seventh year that TNP Be Yourself Day has helped to raise funds for President’s Challenge.

Since July 2008, 30 schools have already celebrated TNP Be Yourself Day and raised close to $16,000. On Friday, 29 August, this year’s official TNP Be Yourself Day, 24 more schools will celebrate in their own way and help to raise more funds. Some other schools will celebrate in September to coincide with their Children’s Day celebrations.

President S R Nathan will grace this year’s TNP Be Yourself Day celebrations at West Spring Secondary School (WSSS). WSSS has chosen the Youth Olympic Games as their theme for TNP Be Yourself Day. The 7-year-old school has done extremely well in air-pistol shooting on the national schools’ shooting scene, with some of its pupils representing the nation and winning medals at international competitions - 3 Gold and 2 Silver medals at the Arafuma Games 2007 in Darwin, Australia and a Bronze medal for the first Asian Schools Shooting Championship in Singapore in July 2008.

Mr Santokh Singh, News Editor of The New Paper and one of the main organisers of TNP Be Yourself Day, said: "TNP Be Yourself Day is a day where everyone in the school, from students to teachers and even canteen operators, can come together and celebrate their individuality. At the same time, it is an opportunity for the youths to do something to benefit society."

2008 also marks the 20th Anniversary of The New Paper, one of Singapore Press Holdings’ 14 newspapers.
