The New Paper goes morning daily and customises paper for readers by offering two editions twice weekly

SINGAPORE, 9 November 2007 - A morning edition daily. And a choice of either a breakfast edition or a lunchtime edition on Mondays and Thursdays. That’s what The New Paper (TNP) is offering its readers from Monday (Nov 12).

Once known as an afternoon newspaper, TNP has been a mixed am and pm news product for several years. From next week, it will be a full-fledged breakfast paper seven days of the week.

On two days of the week, it will produce two editions of the paper -- the usual morning edition and a noon sports edition.

"We’re customising the paper twice a week to cater to different tastes," said Mr Ivan Fernandez, editor of TNP.

Readers who enjoy TNP-style news and features, plus its in-depth sports analysis, tips and graphics, can opt for the morning edition. While sports lovers who crave the latest results of overnight matches on the same day can choose the lunchtime sports edition.

"Our lunchtime editions are now more targeted, said Mr Fernandez. "We zero in on the big matches on Mondays and Thursdays, in particular English Premier League and Champions League clashes.

"Of course during big soccer tournaments like Euro next year and the World Cup in 2010, we’ll have regular lunchtime editions during these periods.

"And when there’s other big breaking news, like a major disaster, TNP will keep you updated in a special afternoon edition."

The sports editions on Mondays and Thursdays will be available before lunchtime at 7-Eleven, Cheers, NTUC Fairprice, Cold Storage, Shop N Save, Guardian Pharmacy, Giant, Shell, Exxon-Mobil, Caltex, SPC, Buzz Pods, Buzz Kiosk, Borders, Cold Storage,Times The Bookshops, Times Newslink, usual neighbourhood outlets, PageOne, Kinokuniya, MRT stations and bus inter-changes. While those who prefer to get TNP at breakfast time can now have the paper delivered to their doorstep daily.

An indication of the demand for a “bright-and-early” edition was seen when The New Paper on Sunday was launched in April 1999. Last year, an average of about 144,000 readers bought the paper every Sunday, mostly in the morning. The Saturday edition went morning in 2004 and the Friday edition followed suit last year. Those who want more information on home and office subscriptions can call 6388-3838.

During a break in the soccer season in July, TNP went fully morning for six weeks. Sales were consistently higher during this period. TNP now reaches about 531,000 readers daily. The latest Nielson media survey also noted TNP’s rising inroads among condo-dwelling readers. Most of its readers are Younger Spenders -- working adults with a median age of 33, against the national average of 36.8.
