Four SPH websites in Marketing magazine’s list of Top 10 websites

SINGAPORE 9 July, 2007 - Four news websites of the Singapore Press Holdings group have made it to Marketing magazine´s list of Top 10 sites that industry players would most willingly pay for advertising.

Collectively, the sites of Hardware Zone (www.hardwarezone.com), SPH AsiaOne (www.asiaone.com), The Business Times (www.businesstimes.com and The Straits Times (www.straitstimes.com) won six spots in the three categories of the magazine´s inaugural Online Media of the Year findings.

Hardware Zone is the top choice for IT news, ahead of CNet, Channel News Asia and Yahoo. SPH AsiaOne is placed 5th in this category.

However in the business and finance news category, SPH AsiaOne is up at Number 2, beating the likes of CNN and Yahoo. The websites of The Business Times and The Straits Times are in 5th and 10th spots respectively.

In terms of search/general news, SPH AsiaOne is ranked 4th but ahead of Channel NewsAsia, Yellow Pages and CNet Asia.

Judging on overall performance, SPH AsiaOne was singled out as one of the versatile and popular websites for clinching Top 5 positions in all three categories — search/general news; business and finance; and IT news.

Local respondents gave it more votes than foreign ones did, with the majority of Singaporeans selecting AsiaOne as Number 1 while most foreign respondents ranked it third.

Despite its popularity with locals, more marketers with regional responsibilities voted for AsiaOne than those with only local responsibilities in the business and finance news category.

On Hardware Zone´s unbeatable strength in IT news, Marketing magazine noted that it offered exclusive coverage of the latest technology gears, reviews for anything from hardcore PC components to lifestyle gadgets, updated technology news as well as educational and buying guides.

“As an IT community portal, hardwarezone.com has the clout of 200,000 members to date, backing its claim as one of the largest of its kind on the internet, no less,” says Marketing magazine whose survey revealed that it enjoyed a slightly stronger local than foreign fan base. It received 63 votes from respondents from companies of local origins against 54 from foreign ones, a strong indication of its growing influence in the international arena.

Hardware Zone, a wholly owned subsidiary of SPH Magazines Pte Ltd, has been winning international acclaim for its strong Internet presence. In June, it was tops again in three categories of awards presented by Hitwise online competitive intelligence service. In all, it has won 14 Hitwise awards over the past five years.

Marketing magazine, which is published in Singapore and Hong Kong, is a leading source of advertising and marketing industry information.

The publication´s Online Media of the Year survey was carried out earlier this year by BDM Intelligence using its database of media professionals, creative, public relations and media planning and buying agencies and clients from across all industries.

The website rankings were determined by the number of votes each site garnered overall from local as well as overseas respondents.

Of the 1,189 valid responses, 759 were from client-side respondents, 430 from agency-side, of which 292 were from creative agencies, 70 from media planning and buying agencies, and 68 from PR consultancies, says Marketing magazine which featured the winners in a special annual edition. The findings also indicated possible ad spend patterns like the kinds of marketers and their choices of websites for ad buys.

The popularity of Hardware Zone and AsiaOne with advertisers was also confirmed by the first AdRelevance findings, based on a Nielsen online ad tracking system for campaign placements in Singapore. It showed that Hardware Zone led by garnering 44 campaign placements by 33 advertisers and 51 banners in the month of May. AsiaOne came in a close second, with 43 campaigns placed by 33 advertisers and 85 banners.
