SPH is biggest winner at 6th Annual Asia Media Awards

Singapore, 29 March 2007 – Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH) emerged the biggest winner at IFRA Asia’s 6th Annual Asia Media Awards last night.

SPH’s haul of seven awards include a Gold and a Silver in two new categories added this year. In total, SPH received one Gold, four Silver and Judges’ Special Recognition for two entries at a gala dinner held in Manila, Philippines last evening.

IFRA Asia is a regional association for the publishing industry. Its Asia Media Awards is a platform for recognising and rewarding excellence, creativity and innovation among newspapers and magazines in Asia and the Middle East.

The Special Projects Unit of SPH’s Marketing Division won a total of three awards for SPH’s English flagship newspaper, The Straits Times, in the Best in Newspaper Supplement Award, a new category that recognises the most innovative and successful newspaper supplements. The unit received a Gold for its Natas Travel 2006 supplement, a Silver for Health & You supplement, and a Judges’ Special Recognition for Singapore JewelFest 2006 package.

Two other SPH publications, The Business Times and The New Paper also won awards. The Business Times bagged a Silver for its widely-read Watch Supplement while The New Paper also took a Silver, for its graphics on the proposed Singapore Flyer observation wheel under the Best in Newspaper Infographics (non breaking news) category. The silver won by The New Paper was the highest award presented in that category — no gold was given this year.

SPH’s subsidiary, SPH Magazines Pte Ltd, also won in another new category — the Best in Magazine Cover Design. SPH Magazines’ ICON MOMENTS 2006/2007 clinched a Silver for the Best in Design Award (Best in Magazine Cover Design) while SilverKris received a Judges’ Special Recognition in the same category. ICON MOMENTS, a luxury watch and jewellery annual, was launched only in September 2006 following the success of the monthly Chinese luxury lifestyle magazine, ICON. SilverKris is an inflight travel magazine published by SPH Magazines on behalf of Singapore Airlines.

Mr Alan Chan, CEO of SPH, says: "We are certainly pleased that SPH has received recognition for our efforts for editorial and design excellence from our peers in the newspaper, media and advertising industry. These awards will serve to motivate the editorial and creative teams who have worked very hard to produce the best for our readers, and to push the bar higher in future publications, supplements and campaigns."

SPH’s victory at the Asia Media Awards followed its win last week at the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association (PANPA) 2007 Newspaper Advertising Awards. At the presentation in Sydney on 19 March, SPH garnered the John V Sellers award for Best Campaign in the over 50,000 circulation category.

The award-winning campaign on SPH’s Ink Awards was featured in The Straits Times. It was created by SPH’s Creative Services unit which also received "highly commended" citations for two other campaigns — the Raffles City Shopping Mall campaign in The Business Times and the branding campaign for Chinese freesheet My Paper which ran in The Straits Times.
