FiRST, Asia’s Premier Movie Magazine Celebrates the 79th Oscars� by Rewarding the Movie Marketers in Singapore


26 February 2007 - For the first time, SPH Magazines Pte Ltd, the Publisher of Choice presents through its very own premier movie magazine in Asia, FiRST, awards to film distributors of the seven best performing films in 2006.

The FiRST Awards will be presented to film distributors of the best box-office performing movies, in terms of FiRST’s editors’ and readers’ choices and actual ticket sales at the cinemas and for their marketing efforts behind the movies. The award presentation will be held at the FiRST 79th Oscars® Brunch Party on 26 February 2007.

FiRST is riding on the local Oscars® fever to recognise those who have played significant roles in creating success behind the best selling movies in Singapore. And being the only dedicated movie magazine in Singapore, it is only apt for FiRST to be giving away these awards.” commented Mr Allen Loh, Managing Director, SPH Magazines Pte Ltd.

FiRST Awards´ Winners

Winners for “Biggest Singapore Box Office 2006”and “Biggest Singapore Box Office 2006 – Asian Language Film” and “Biggest Singapore Box Office 2006 – Feature Animation” were identified based on industry gross box office figures for 2006. They are Twentieth Century Fox Film (East) Pte Ltd, film distributor of “X-Men: The Last Stand”, Mediacorp Raintree Pictures Pte Ltd and United International Pictures Pte Ltd, film distributor of “I Not Stupid Too”, and Golden Village Pictures Pte Ltd, film distributor of “Happy Feet” , respectively.

FiRST Favourite Cover – Readers´ Choice” was determined by readers´ votes. Winner is Twentieth Century Fox Film (East) Pte Ltd, film distributor of “X-Men: The Last Stand”

FiRST Best Selling Cover 2006”, “Most Popular Female Celebrity Cover 2006” and “Most Popular Male Celebrity Cover 2006” were determined based on circulation figures. The awards go to Sony Pictures Releasing International, marketer of Kate Beckinsale in “Underworld: Evolution” and Twentieth Century Fox Film (East) Pte Ltd, marketer of Hugh Jackman in “X-Men: The Last Stand”, respectively.

Best Film Reviewed – Editors´ Choice” and “Best DVD Reviewed – Editors´ Choice”, were picked by the editors and writers based on reviews that have received at least 4-and-a-half if not 5 star ratings. Winners are Festive Films Pte Ltd and Golden Village Pictures, film distributors of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and Scorpio East Entertainment Pte Ltd, film distributor of “Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” respectively.

“The FiRST Awards will boost and motivate film distributors to explore innovative ways to generate more hype and excitement for the films they are marketing, making our movie industry more engaging to the public,” said Mr Brett Hogg, Chairman, Motion Picture Distributors Association Singapore, “The FiRST 79th Oscars® Brunch Party, gives good opportunity for film distributors to network with the non-distributors. It creates opportunities for us to work with one another. The FiRST 79th Oscars® Brunch Party is the natural platform to present the FiRST Awards.”

Supported by Motion Picture Distributors Association Singapore, FiRST has been organising the brunch party for 4 years now. But this is the first time FiRST Awards are presented at the party. Besides the award presentation, guests will catch the LIVE Broadcast of The 79th Academy®Awards, as well as network with the key personnel in the movie and entertainment industry.

Right after the event, results for the online voting, by FiRST readers and public who support their favourites among the Oscars® nominees, will be announced. The top 50 voters with the most correct number of votes will receive a FiRST Oscars® limited Goodie Bag worth $400 each.
