The Ngee Ann Kongsi sponsors Lianhe Zaobao subscriptions for needy households

Singapore, 12 March 2019 - More than 800 needy households will receive free Lianhe Zaobao subscriptions for one year under a $150,000 public education initiative sponsored by non-profit foundation, The Ngee Ann Kongsi.

With the help of the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Chinese Media Group had identified the beneficiaries, including households with elderly and students, who will get to enjoy the daily benefits of quality news information provided by SPH’s flagship Chinese language newspaper in print.

Starting from April, these beneficiaries will be able to follow Lianhe Zaobao’s reports on the latest developments in government policies and be kept up to date with local and global news.

Ms Lee Huay Leng, Head of SPH Chinese Media Group, said: “Living in an age of fake news and misinformation, it is important to have trusted news sources that provide quality reporting backed by verified facts. The Ngee Ann Kongsi’s sponsorship of Lianhe Zaobao subscription is a good example of a new way of helping the needy in our community. We hope more organisations can come forward so that a wider group of beneficiaries can also benefit. ”

Founded in 1845, The Ngee Ann Kongsi is actively involved in educational, cultural and welfare activities in Singapore. It has evolved from looking after the religious and welfare needs of Teochew immigrants in Singapore to become a significant contributor to the local community regardless of race, language, religion or social status. Revenue generated from its ventures such as the landmark Ngee Ann City Shopping and Office complex in Orchard Road, and rental of properties is used to fund educational and other charitable projects.

Mr Richard Lee, President of The Ngee Ann Kongsi, shared: "Since our founding in 1845, one of The Ngee Ann Kongsi’s key purposes was to provide quality education. We firmly believe in empowerment through education and recognise the importance of being well-informed. We are excited to collaborate with Lianhe Zaobao to launch this public education initiative. We hope that by providing newspaper subscriptions, beneficiaries can continue to enrich their knowledge in the midst of a changing global landscape. The Ngee Ann Kongsi will continue to provide opportunities for lifelong learning in Singapore, for more people to reach their fullest potential."
