SPH’s Chinese Media Group launches Singapore's Bicentennial series on multiple platforms

Singapore, 24 January 2019 - Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese Media Group (CMG) NewsHub will be launching Singapore's Bicentennial Series - “Treasures Before Us”(新加坡前传)on 25 January 2019.

The “Treasures before Us” series aims to encourage readers and viewers to rethink the common narrative of Singapore’s past by focusing on Singapore’s 700-year history, with an emphasis on its pre-colonial and 19th century history.

The series consists of five chapters, each exploring a key topic in Singapore’s history. These stories will be presented through multiple platforms, including a long-form interactive website on zaobao.sg, a 3D virtual museum, a 5-episode video series, and a series of 5 print articles on Lianhe Zaobao.

In this 3D virtual museum, viewers will get to explore artefacts from around the world up close. Each artefact tells a unique story about Singapore’s history. These artefacts are provided by University of Amsterdam Special Collections Library, National Museum of China and National Museum of Singapore.

For the first time, CMG has invited 5 representatives from diverse history related fields to narrate Singapore’s history in the “Treasures before Us” video series. They include “Friends of the Museums” docent Lim Yuen Ping, archaeologist Tai Yew Seng, veteran culture and arts correspondent Chow Yian Ping, Nature Society member Wing Chong and renowned historian Kua Bak Lim.

The video series will be available on the “Treasures Before Us” long-form website and zaobao.sg’s Facebook page on 25 January. Each episode is about 4 minutes long, with English and Chinese subtitles.

Ms Han Yong May, NewsHub Editor, CMG, said: "Producing this series has expanded our knowledge of Singapore's history and introduced us to many Singaporeans from diverse backgrounds who have a common interest in our shared history. As the Chinese saying goes, ‘we don't have to search high and low because the masters are right amongst us’(高手在民间). These Singaporeans have greatly enriched this feature. Besides text, photos and videos, we also experimented with animation and 3D technology, allowing our readers and users to ‘touch’ and explore rare artefacts. This project is our unique offering to commemorate Singapore's Bicentennial.”

Ms Ang Yiting, Digital Editor, CMG, said: “Our digital design team aims to try out new interactive techniques for every special project to enhance our user experience. This is our first foray into 3D technology and it is especially befitting for this content. Key national artefacts from around the world, which are not easily accessible due to geographical distance and restricted access, are now brought to one virtual space for our users. We hope they will enjoy this novel and interactive experience.”
