ChildAid 2018 charity concert raises more than $2 million

Singapore, 26 November 2018 - This year's annual ChildAid concert organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times raised $2,057,237, bringing the collective amount raised over the years to more than $18 million.

The annual charity concert, which started in 2005, raises money for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, which provides financial assistance to socially disadvantaged school-going children to pay for their meals and transport fees, as well as The Business Times Budding Artists Fund which pays for financially disadvantaged children's lessons in the performing arts.

President Halimah Yacob witnessed the presentation of cheques from key donors at the concert's gala night on Monday (26 Nov 2018) at Resorts World Theatre, Resorts World Sentosa, the official ChildAid venue partner for the third year consecutively since 2016. They were the venue partner in 2009 and 2010 too.

ChildAid's main sponsors for this year, United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) and Citi Singapore donated $1 million and $730,337 respectively. The three platinum sponsors were Porsche Asia Pacific and Stuttgart Auto, Tote Board and Suntory Beverage & Food Asia, which each donated $100,000 and above.

Mr Warren Fernandez, editor-in-chief of Singapore Press Holdings' English / Malay / Tamil Media Group and editor of The Straits Times, said: "Children performing in support of their peers who are less fortunate than them is what ChildAid is all about. It benefits both those performing and also the recipients, who could do with the help. Thankfully, our donors see the value in this, and we are most grateful for their strong support over the years."

Helming ChildAid again as creative director for the second year was homegrown singer-songwriter and Cultural Medallion recipient Dick Lee, whose company Dick Lee Asia produced the show. Mr Lee first directed a ChildAid show last year (2017).

Speaking about this year's show, which ran over two nights (25 Nov and 26 Nov) and was themed Jumpin' Jukebox Jive, Mr Lee said: "ChildAid 2018 is full of pop music that everyone can relate to no matter which generation they are from. Besides featuring music relevant to the kids, experiencing the music of the past will be great education for them, and a wonderful trip down memory lane for the adults."

A cast comprising of 143 performers, aged five to 19, sang, dance or played instruments to a line-up of more than 35 songs spanning six decades.

The tunes included evergreen favourites such as Rhythm of the Rain by The Cascades (in the '60s segment), Sing by The Carpenters (in the '70s segment), Greatest Love Of All by Whitney Houston (in the '80s segment), Wannabe by the Spice Girls (in the '90s segment), to more current hits such as Taylor Swift's Shake It Off.

Mr Wee Ee Cheong, deputy chairman and CEO, UOB, said: "Every child has the potential to achieve great things given the chance. Our long-term support for ChildAid gives children from less privileged backgrounds opportunities to broaden their horizons through education and to open their minds through art."

Mr Amol Gupte, ASEAN head and Citi country officer, Singapore, said: "Citi has been a strong supporter of ChildAid since its inception in 2005 because we believe that children and young people from socially-disadvantaged homes should be given the opportunity to fulfil their aspirations. Our belief stems from our commitment to enable growth and progress in the communities where we live and work."

Mr Tan Hee Teck, chief executive officer, Resorts World Sentosa, said: "At Resorts World Sentosa, we believe in providing equal opportunities for every child to develop their fullest potential across different fields, be it academic, sports or performing arts. We want to do our part and empower children and youths to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact in the community."
