Singapore, 23 May 2018 - Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore throws the spotlight on local trailblazers in its June 2018 issue with a cover that features Singapore’s first Olympic gold medalist, Joseph Schooling.
This is the first time in its 17-year history that the magazine has featured a man on its main cover, and it couldn’t have found a more fitting cover star than the 23-year-old swimmer. As Editor-in-Chief Kenneth Goh says: “The second Joseph Schooling won Singapore her first Olympic gold, I knew I had to find the right occasion to put him on the cover. When Joseph turned professional in March, and started working with fashion brands, I thought this was the right time to have him as the first solo man on our cover. I wanted to capture a handsome athlete with the soft touch of a woman’s hand, dazzling with the finest jewels. That’s when I turned to BAZAAR’s extensive archives and took inspiration from the original cover from 1965 with Steve McQueen.”
In 2016, Schooling became an international figure and national icon overnight when he beat his childhood hero Michael Phelps to set a new Olympic record of 50.39 seconds for the 100m butterfly event at the Rio De Janeiro Olympic Games. Two years later, and the swimmer still has his sights trained on continued success in his swimming career.
Taking time out from his busy training schedule to shoot with the BAZAAR team in Los Angeles, Schooling donned a made-to-measure tuxedo by BOSS for a photograph that pays homage to yet another iconic image: Harper’s BAZAAR US’ February 1965 issue, which saw Steve McQueen becoming the first man to ever be featured on the cover of a women’s fashion magazine.
This is Schooling’s first fashion cover; and he joins a long list of celebrities who have graced the covers of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, including Kate Hudson, Christy Turlington Burns, Alessandra Ambrosio, Janet Jackson, Victoria Beckham, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and more.
