SPH wins big at Asian Digital Media Awards 2017

Singapore, 1 November 2017 - Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH) chalked up eleven wins at the Asian Digital Media Awards 2017, held this afternoon at the Digital Media Asia 2017 conference at The Orchard Hotel.

The Straits Times (ST), SPH's English-language flagship daily was the biggest winner with 8 accolades.

Among its wins was a Silver award for Best in Lifestyle, Sports or Entertainment Website for Gold: Joseph Schooling's Road to Rio. It traces the national swimmer's road to Rio and records the moment of glory for the entire nation by analysing Schooling's 100m swim over 50.39 seconds - frame by frame, stroke by stroke. It was done within hours of his win.

ST won two awards for Best News Mobile Service. It took Silver for The Straits Times Apps. The apps, available on iOS and Android platforms - together with the website - form the core products of the publication. The user-centric enhancements in the June 2016 release of the apps help to improve the ST experience across key mobile platforms. ST also bagged a Bronze for All the Queen's men and women, about the fall of South Korea's first female President Park Geun Hye. With such a gripping storyline and colourful characters, ST decided to tell the story like a Korean drama, in fast-paced Snapchat style.

A Bronze award for Best Use of Online Video went to ST's Are you future ready? This virtual reality project connects the dots behind Singapore's vision to be a smart nation and educates the readers on smart nation technologies in a fun, game-like style.

ST's total award tally is as follows:

  • Silver for Best in Lifestyle, Sports or Entertainment Website - Gold: Joseph Schooling's Road to Rio
  • Silver for Best News Mobile Service - The Straits Times Apps
  • Silver for Best Digital Advertising Campaign - The anatomy of cancer
  • Silver for Best Lifestyle, Sports or Entertainment Mobile Services - South-east Asia's brightest hopes
  • Bronze for Best News Mobile Service - All the Queen's men and women
  • Bronze for Best Use of Online Video - Are you future ready?
  • Bronze for Best Lifestyle, Sports or Entertainment Mobile Services - Christmas in the City in 360
  • Bronze for Best Innovation New Product - The Straits Times... coming to you from your smart home gadget
Stomp, the citizen-journalism website, won two awards. It clinched Gold for Best in Social Media Engagement for Activating Stomp's Awesome Citizen Journalists. The entry features the website's strong rapport with its active community of citizen journalists, and how it has upped the ante on social media by using platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter for breaking news, gathering information and building community.
It also bagged a Bronze for Best News Website for Building an Active Community. Stomp highlights some of its community building efforts that transcend news reporting, including rallying its community to help people in need and rewarding good Samaritans who perform random acts of kindness. The Best News Website winner also features more streamlined navigation and a new look in its 2017 revamp.

Mr Warren Fernandez, Editor-in-Chief of SPH's English/Malay/Tamil Media Group and Editor of The Straits Times, said: "We are continuing on our transformation journey, striving to producing more digital content as well as more compelling content. These awards are recognition of those efforts made by all on our team. We still have room to improve if we are to meet the expectations of our readers and serve them well."

Rounding up its haul is SPH's Chinese Media Group Digital (CMGD) for its Silver in Best in Social Media Engagement for Live! @ The Newsroom. It is a live broadcast programme produced by CMGD in close collaboration with the media group's evening dailies Lianhe Wanbao (WB) and Shin Min Daily News (SM). The programme broadcasts from Mondays to Fridays (except public holidays) on Lianhe Zaobao's Facebook page and the channel on RINGS LIVE. Journalists from WB and SM join a host from CMGD to share some of the day's top stories in a personable and engaging manner, which allows realtime interaction with viewers.

Ms Lee Huay Leng, Head of CMG, said: "I see double significance in this award. Firstly, this programme involves close collaboration across three units namely Lianhe Wanbao, Shin Min Daily and Chinese Media Group Digital. Many colleagues participated in this initiative and they were natural and confident speaking to viewers in front of camera. This is a strong testament of the value of collaboration. Secondly, through this programme, the Chinese Media Group Digital brought the two publications into the social media world, and using this platform, we successfully introduced the content of our two evening dailies to the wider digital audience. Innovation has opened up a new audience market for us."

The Asian Digital Media Awards 2017, jointly presented by WAN-IFRA and Google, recognise publishers who have adopted digital media and mobile strategies as part of their total product offering to meet the major changes in how people consume news and information today.
