Singapore, 6 April 2017 – Shin Min Daily News (Shin Min), the evening daily of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), today celebrated 50 years of engaging readers and advertisers on board Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas.
The Guest of Honour, Mr Chee Hong Tat, Minister of State for Communications and Information, and Health, was accompanied by Mr Anthony Tan, Deputy CEO of SPH; Ms Lee Huay Leng, Head of SPH’s Chinese Media Group (CMG); Mr Choo Chee Wee, Editor of Shin Min Daily News and Ms Elsie Chua, Chief Marketing Officer of SPH. Together with 200 invited guests, they viewed an exhibition and video showcasing Shin Min’s 50 years of history.
Minister Chee launched a special commemorative book that documented the milestones of the paper over the past five decades, followed by cake cutting and champagne toasting. Another highlight of the celebration was the SM50 dish specially prepared by Chef Austen Ong and Celebrity Moses Lim, using 50 ingredients to signify Shin Min’s journey.
First published on 18 March 1967, Shin Min Daily News has captivated readers with its engaging human-interest stories about the community, including crime, family issues, health, entertainment and sports, for the past 50 years. Shin Min was the brainchild of Axe Brand Universal Oil founder Leung Yun Chee and renowned Hong Kong writer Louis Cha, who is better known by his pen name Jin Yong. Both shared a common vision and passion of producing a Chinese daily for Singapore.
With a start-up investment of $1m, the founders were not hopeful of making any profit initially and expected to incur losses for the first five years. However, the newspaper started to rake in profits from the third year, and it has since grown from strength to strength. It also scored many news scoops which became hot topics that were much talked about by readers.
To keep up with the times in this digital age, Shin Min started its own Facebook (FB) page in 2012 and has since garnered over 111,000 Likes. Besides sharing print content and breaking news, the team also posts exclusive content on FB in the form of daily columns on a wide range of topics such as health, recipes, living tips and inspiration quotes etc.
Starting last year, Shin Min has been collaborating with CMG Digital to produce digital stories daily, adding a new dimension to its print content. These digital stories are available on Shin Min FB page as well as the CMG integrated online platform zaobao.sg. Shin Min also launched its official website shinmin.sg in 2016, where readers can subscribe and access the e-paper. On top of these, Shin Min has launched its weibo, twitter and instagram accounts to further engage and interact with a wider group of readers and audience.
Choo Chee Wee, Editor of Shin Min Daily News, said: "We will continue with human-interest articles and stories that our readers can relate to. To stay even more connected, we will strengthen the integration of print and digital. Our team will work hard together for the future."
To commemorate the newspaper's golden jubilee, there will be a series of year-long activities, such as a cruise for over 300 readers who will set sail from 6 to 10 April on board Ovation of the Seas; and cash prizes of $60,000 for readers in a match and win contest, presented by LKF Medical.
The SM50 Exhibition will be showcased at the Singapore Book Fair in June, as well as roving at heartland malls. There will be exclusive fine dining experience for readers, with presentation of dishes by award-winning chefs of international culinary competitions. Other annual flagship events to look out for include Hawkers Hunt, Arm-Wrestling Competition and Getai Awards.
