SPH newspapers The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao and Berita Harian win Gold and Bronze awards for "Best in Print" at 2016 Asian Media Awards

Singapore, 21 September 2016 - Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) newspapers - The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao and Berita Harian - have won gold and bronze awards for "Best in Print" during the 2016 Asian Media Awards.

SPH's English flagship newspaper The Straits Times won the Gold award in the category for "Circulation over 150,000 copies". Chinese language daily Lianhe Zaobao and Malay language daily Berita Harian won the Gold and Bronze awards respectively in the category for "Circulation below 150,000 copies".

The awards were presented during the World Printer Forum, as part of the WAN-IFRA India conference 2016 held in Kolkata, India.

SPH was one of the successful participants in the International Newspaper Color Quality Club (INCQC) competition in 2016 where it had submitted the three newspaper titles for assessment at this biennial event. This granted SPH automatic entry into the “Best in Print" Awards.

Established in 1994, INCQC's mandate is to improve the day-to-day quality in reproduction and printing of newspapers worldwide. This quality benchmark is based on proven international process standards and is the only worldwide printing quality competition for newspapers. Participating newspapers have to prove that they can consistently print in accordance with these standards such as ensuring the newspaper copy is clean and free of general print quality defects.

Successful newspaper publishers are admitted into the exclusive INCQC for two years and the membership is renewed when it meets the criteria for subsequent INCQC competitions. Publishers receive a Star Club award for having successfully participated in at least five editions of INCQC competition. As of July 2016, there are 36 newspaper publishers among the Star Club members and they include notable publishers from Austria, Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland and USA. To date, SPH has achieved the status of 7 stars in the WAN-IFRA "Star Club".

Founded in 1948, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, or WAN-IFRA, is the global organisation of the world’s press. It derives its authority from its global network of 3,000 news publishing companies and technology entrepreneurs, and its legitimacy from its 80 member publisher associations representing 18,000 publications in 120 countries.

Mr Alan Chan, Chief Executive Officer, SPH, said: "These awards are a testament to the high standards that SPH adheres to in colour printing and production. By ensuring that we achieve the best printing standards for our newspapers, our advertisers and readers can look forward to quality products that will better serve their needs."
