Germaine Monteiro and Pocket Sun win subsidiary awards at the inaugural CLEO Change Maker Awards Party

Singapore, 27 August 2016 – CLEO Singapore, the best-selling local magazine for young women, recognised 10 Change Makers at the official Awards Party on Friday night (26 August).

These 10 young women have made an impact in our society and their respective industries, and have inspired others to do the same.


Germaine Monteiro, co-founder of The Nail Social, won the Reader's Choice Award. Her business, a socially conscious nail salon that trains and offers jobs to women facing barriers to employment, struck a chord with CLEO readers.

Germaine, who walked away with an SK-II hamper worth over $500, said: “If you are steering a social enterprise, remember why you started it. There will be times you question yourself, have doubts, feel down and wonder why. Just remember why you started and go for it." 

The event also crowned Pocket Sun the winner of the Change Destiny Award, which was presented with SK-II. Pocket is a founding partner of SoGal ventures, the first female-led venture capital fund that empowers young women to find their best self through entrepreneurship. She walked away with a $1,000 SK-ll hamper.

Pocket said: “Remember that you're born different. It's okay to be called crazy because only people crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. Women need to start knowing your worth and supporting one another. We're on this empowering journey together!"

CLEO Change Makers is a new event that celebrates women who embody the CLEO motto “Your life, your rules”. The Awards Party was held at Kyo, where over 300 people were present to celebrate their achievements.

Claire Starkey, Editor-in-Chief of CLEO Singapore, said: “It has been such a pleasure to get to know these 10 women over the course of this campaign. Even though their paths that got them to where they are could not be more different, they truly do embody the CLEO motto and the term Change Maker too."

“They deserve recognition for all those sleepless nights they’ve put in, and the times they’ve had to believe in something that no one else did – and the CLEO team is so happy we can give them that. We hope that they walk away from this feeling even a tenth as inspired as we do.”
