SPH wins five awards at Asian Media Awards 2016

Singapore, 30 March 2016 – Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH), Asia’s leading media company, tonightwon five awards for outstanding design for newspaper and magazine, photojournalism and community service at the Asian Media Awards 2016. The awards were presented at the Publish Asia 2016 Gala Dinner by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in Manila, The Philippines.

The Straits Times (ST), the English-language flagship daily of SPH, clinched Gold for Best in Design (Newspaper Overall Design) for its launch issue of the redesigned paper. To mark its 170th anniversary last year, the editorial team gave the products – print, website, mobile and tablet – a major revamp. The content is now drawn from its 400-strong, fully integrated multi-media newsroom, which includes experienced correspondents in Singapore as well as around Asia and the world, giving readers and advertisers the same quality content and a consistent look and feel across all ST's products.

ST also came in strong for Photojournalism, bagging the awards for:

· Silver for Best in Photojournalism (Sports Photography) for 'Para Games' where ST Executive Photographer Lim Sin Thai documented picture-perfect moments at the 8th ASEAN Para Games.

· Bronze for Best in Photojournalism (Feature Photography) for the highly-acclaimed image of 'Black Knight' - the official aerobatics team of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) featuring six F-16C Fighting Falcons in formation flight, captured by Alphonsus Chern, ST Executive Photographer.

Mr Warren Fernandez, Editor of The Straits Times, said: "I'm glad that our efforts to revamp ST have  been recognised. We aimed for a new layout that showcased our contents better for our readers. Kudos to our award-winning photographers too, who have always been strong in capturing the essence of events to engage our readers. We'll aim to keep getting even better as we go along."

Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao, SPH’s Chinese flagship daily and evening newspaper respectively, also won a Silver for Best in Community Service.  The project 'Reading Newspapers With The Elderly' (陪你看报纸)is targeted at Singapore's ageing population, many of whom  are illiterate. Since August 2014, Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao have been helping the elderly to connect with society through the reading of newspapers with editors and reporters, and using newspaper cuttings, photographs and slides to increase their understanding of current affairs.

More than 100 volunteers from the two Chinese language newspapers read to the elderly at three locations for an hour every week. Over the last two years, this novel initiative has attracted many supporters, with more community partners expressing interest to come onboard. In 2015, the papers also organised eight special talks based on issues that are relevant to the elderly, such as enacting a will and Lasting Power of Attorney, managing personal finances after retirement and monetising home assets etc. More than 4,000 elderly have benefitted from these talks by professionals.

Mr Goh Sin Teck, Editor of Lianhe Zaobao, said: "Lianhe Zaobao, together with Lianhe Wanbao, is proud that such a meaningful community service activity is gaining popularity in Singapore, with thousands of seniors benefitting over a short span of two years. We are pleased to collaborate with new partners and look forward to even more engaging sessions."

The Peak Selections: Gourmet & Travel, a publication of The Peak by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd (SPH Magazines), won a Bronze for Best in Design (Magazine Overall Design) for its Issue 15.
