Singapore, 14 December 2015 --- After two weeks of voting, the eagerly awaited results of Lianhe Zaobao's "Character of the Year" readers' poll is finally out. "耀", a Chinese character of varied meanings, has emerged as readers' choice to sum up 2015.Lianhe Zaobao, the Chinese flagship newspaper of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), has been organising 字述一年(Character of the Year) since 2011. For the fifth year running, readers were invited to participate in the annual poll by choosing a Chinese character that they feel would best summarise the major local and international news events of the year."耀" has meanings of radiance, shine, brilliance, and bringing glory or glorious. It is also directly linked to the names of notable figures who have been repeatedly reported in 2015, including the founding Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew 李光耀.In March 2015, Singapore, together with many other countries, paid their respect to the late leader. Many Singaporeans were filled with grief when they realised that he could not celebrate Singapore's 50th year of independence with the nation he built.Another notable news event of 2015 was Singapore Botanic Gardens becoming Singapore's First UNESCO World Heritage Site. The World Heritage Committee announced the Gardens’ successful inscription on 4 July 2015.Mr Goh Sin Teck, Editor of Lianhe Zaobao, said: “2015 has been an especially eventful year for the media, from natural disasters to the passing of a great man, as well as various local and international news events that hold great significance both politically and historically. Within a year, we have seen joys and sorrows, separations and reunions, and have tasted the sweetness and bitterness of life. Predictably, our readers eventually chose '耀'. Although this character can be linked to various news events, the news that will first come to people's mind would still be the passing of our founding Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew. This shows that when readers look back at the major events of the year, the one that leaves the deepest impression is our shared memories of the seven days in March.”This year, the editorial team of Lianhe Zaobao, together with a panel of 10 professionals comprising experts and academics of different fields, short-listed 10 Chinese characters for the poll. They include "耀", "民" (citizenry)," 国" (nation), "惊" (surprise/shock), "难" (difficulty), "信" (trust), "责"(responsibility), "新" (afresh/renew), "毒" (noxious) and "汇" (currency). During the voting period, Lianhe Zaobao featured each Chinese character in a full page report for 10 consecutive days. Each article expounded on the various definitions of the character and how its meanings were linked to the major local and international events of the year. Similar to last year's voting, readers voted through Zaobao.com, SMS, email or by sending in a voting form. Overseas voters, mainly users of Zaobao.com, were also invited to participate, indicating their choice of "Character of the Year".Please see attached media release in Chinese.
