The Peak Power List 2015 honours Singapore’s top women

Singapore, 3 November 2015 – The Peak, Singapore’s leading luxury lifestyle magazine published by SPH Magazines, honoured 10 female game-changers in its annual Power List. These individuals have shattered the proverbial glass ceiling and scaled the corporate rungs to be leaders and influencers in their respective professions.

They include headlining names such as visionary businesswoman Chew Gek Khim, private banking head honcho Tan Su Shan, and legendary hospitality doyenne Jennie Chua, and extends to power personalities Tan Yen Yen (IT), Rachel Eng (Law), Rita Soh (Architecture), Noeleen Heyzer (Humanitarian work), Ivy Ng (Healthcare), Chong Ee Rong (Public Relations) and Yasmin Khan (Logistics).

For the full list of personalities of this year’s The Peak Power List, please refer to Annexe.

The selection process began in March this year, in collaboration with the Singapore Institute of International Affairs and Patrick Daniel, editor-in-chief of SPH’s English/Malay/Tamil Media group. Candidates were selected from a range of industries, for their contributions to their organisation's growth, as well as their impact in their field of work and society at large.
For over 30 years, The Peak has documented the success stories of the nation’s most powerful individuals.

“Our annual Power List, which features 10 personalities in one issue, is the culmination of what we do. It doesn’t just lists the who’s who of Singapore, but goes deep into these individuals’ experiences and insights. The result is always a fascinating story. In addition to being top in their professions, the honourees are forces in philanthropy, mentorship, and social enterprise, bettering the lives and prospects of those around them. I am proud to recognise their work in this year's Power List,” said Jennifer Chen, editor of The Peak.

The unveiling of the Power List was held in the Bugis Grand Ballroom at Intercontinental Singapore, in collaboration with Official Car Sponsor Maserati and alcohol partners The Macallan and Snow Leopard, and gift partners Mont Blanc and La Mer. As a toast to the honourees, The Macallan and Snow Leopard created special cocktails aptly named Gold Fashioned and Primal Instinctrespectively. The Macallan Brand Advocate Randall Tan was on hand to share his expertise of whisky pairing with over 100 VIP guests.

The Peak is a luxury lifestyle magazine that is published monthly and delivered to the doorsteps of Singapore’s C-suite executives and top-tier professionals. It is also available in a tablet edition and online at, both of which offer content that is exclusive to the digital platforms.

1. Chew Gek Khim, Executive Chairman of Straits Trading and Executive Chairman of Tecity Group.
Since taking over Straits Trading as executive chairman in 2008, Chew has been credited for transforming the 127-year-old conglomerate with a hotchpotch of interests into a dynamic powerhouse that is nimbler, with interests in real estate, hospitality, and metals and minerals resources.

2. Chong Ee Rong, Managing Director, Ogilvy Public Relations
She spearheaded some of Singapore's most memorable publicity campaigns – Hawker Heroes two years ago saw Michelin-star chef Gordon Ramsay pit his culinary skills against some of Singapore’s best-loved food vendors. Under her leadership, Ogilvy PR Singapore's business has doubled in size and is one of the most profitable operations in the Asia-Pacific region.

3. Jennie Chua, Ambassador to The United Mexican States
She brought Singapore to the top league of the global convention business; elevated the prestige of the Raffles brand; and helmed The Ascott Group, the world’s largest owner-operator of serviced residences. She was chairman of the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce, the first woman to hold the post in the chamber's 178-year history.

4. Rachel Eng, Joint Managing Partner, WongPartnership LLP
Since joining the law firm in 1995, she has handled some of the nation’s biggest initial public offerings, including CapitaMalls Asia and IHH Healthcare, the first dual concurrent listing on Bursa Malaysia and the Singapore Exchange. She is the only person to have been named Managing Partner of the Year at the ALB SE Asia Law Awards twice.

5. Noeleen Heyzer, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General
Heyzer put Singapore on the UN map. As the first Singaporean to head a UN agency and the first woman outside North America to head Unifem, she spearheaded efforts that led to women participating in peace negotiation and the electoral process and, in shaping their post-conflict societies, transformed the lives of millions in developing countries.

6. Yasmin Khan, Senior Vice-President, Southeast Asia & South Asia, DHL Express
She is one of the key drivers behind the establishment of DHL’s ground-breaking Disaster Recovery Team (DRT), which provides logistics services to governments during natural calamities. Since 2005, DRTs have been deployed over 30 times worldwide to assist in global emergencies, including in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake, and Vanuatu following the destruction caused by Cyclone Pam early this year.

7. Professor Ivy Ng, Group CEO, Singapore Health Services
In her eight years as CEO at KKH, she helped transform it from an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist to that of a women’s and children’s hospital offering a holistic range of services from preventive fitness assessments to treatment of acute conditions and tertiary care of complex diseases. As group CEO of SingHealth, she oversees the development of the regional health system in the north-east, which includes the upcoming Sengkang Health hospitals.

8. Rita Soh, Director, RDC Architects
Soh is a force for innovation in the architecture field. During her tenure as president of the Singapore Institute of Architects, she spearheaded the creation of a company within the institute to conduct full-time research and testing of IT solutions for her fellow professionals. She was also the driving force behind Apex, a software for architects to manage their e-mail, timesheets and project data. Apex has since evolved into a Web-based programme and is now being marketed to professionals such as engineers and contractors.

9. Tan Su Shan, Managing Director and Group Head of Consumer Banking and Wealth Management, DBS Bank
Last year, Tan led DBS’ acquisition of the Asian private banking business of French bank Societe Generale, which cemented the local bank’s status as a key player in the regional banking scene. Last October, she was named the world’s Best Leader in Private Banking at the prestigious PWM/The Banker Global Private Banking Awards in Geneva, a first for a Singaporean.

10. Tan Yen Yen, Regional Vice-President and MD, Asia Pacific (South), SAS
Tan is the first woman to win the IT Leader of the Year title from the Singapore Computer Society for her significant contribution to the IT industry here.
