“Anything that brings awareness to something that people are afraid to talk about, that gets people talking about, is great,” said Shu An. “With more awareness, it’s one more person added to the web of support for survivors.”
Jade’s reason for participating in the campaign is a little more personal. “My mom has worked at the National Cancer Centre for the past twenty years or so. She often goes through the obituaries and tells me which ones are her patients. I asked her if it was depressing, and she’d said that even though it is, she’s helping somebody.”

To create the art piece, Adeline painted over the 3-D models, each in a myriad of vibrant colours. These 3-D models were then fixed together to form the shape of the pink ribbon, the international symbol for breast cancer awareness. The completed art piece will be on display at a special exhibition at the atrium of Paragon, and a silent auction of all the 3-D models will take place from 17 October to 15 November. With a target of $15,000, all funds raised through the auction will go towards Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF).
“My art has always been positive, and I hope to convey faith, love and hope through this art piece. It’s also about positivity and new beginnings, and celebrating that support from friends, family and our extended community. In total, I spent around two months thinking about how I could convey this through my finger painting,” said Adeline.
At the exhibition, readers can help support the cause in two ways: take a picture with our Bare for Hope pledge card, and upload it to their Instagram accounts with the hashtag #bareforhope. For every 10 hashtags, Parkway Cancer Centre (PCC) will sponsor a mammogram for women at the Star Shelter – a temporary refuge for survivors of domestic violence, a service by the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations (SCWO). Each pledger will then receive a Her World goodie bag, which includes a three-month digital subscription to Her World and a best-selling VDL trial kit worth $15 (limited to first 50 pledgers per day). Alternatively, they can donate $5 to the BCF and receive a BCF pink ribbon pin.
Her World readers can also purchase a specially curated VDL Pink Set, available at all VDL stores that month, at a special rate of $68 (U.P. $79) or $65 if they flash the pledge card included in the October issue of Her World. For every Pink Set purchased, $1 will be donated to BCF. Each Pink Set consists of an Expert Color Lip Cube (in 10 shades of pink), a Festival Blusher, a Festival Nail Polish (Pink), as well as a limited edition pink makeup pouch.
Throughout the month of October, Her World readers can visit the special Her World microsite (http://campaign.herworldplus.com/herworld55/) to find out more about the campaign and the silent auction, and take part in the same Instagram pledging drive. They will also get access to useful information on breast cancer awareness and breast care, as well as video interviews with some of the participants of the Bare for Hope art piece, including Jade Seah and Oon Shu An.
