Announcing the winners of Shin Min/ Wanbao Getai Awards 2015

 - Event also raised $168,888 for President's Challenge 2015

Singapore, 4 October 2015 --- Results of this year's Shin Min / Wanbao Getai Awards 2015 《新明/晚报歌台红星大奖颁奖礼2015 were announced tonight at an awards ceremony at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. 

Back for the 6th year, the Awards, organised by Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) Chinese evening newspapers Shin Min Daily News and Lianhe Wanbao, honours the best getai talents in the local entertainment scene. 

President Tony Tan Keng Yam was the Guest of Honour while Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development, was the Special Guest. Mr Baey Yam Keng, Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth, was amongst the distinguished guests. Members of Parliament Mr Seah Kian Peng and Mr Gan Thiam Poh were also present at the awards ceremony.

This year's Shin Min/ Wanbao Getai Awards was also organised for a good cause. Proceeds from the sale of tickets to the show and awards ceremony were donated to President's Challenge 2015. In addition to individual and corporate donations, the event raised a total of $168,888 for President's Challenge, which is a series of charity events to rally Singaporeans from all walks of life to help raise funds for the social service sector. 

Mr Anthony Tan, Executive Vice President of Chinese Media Group, SPH, presented the cheque to President Tony Tan Keng Yam at the awards ceremony. 

A total of 6,000 people packed the exhibition hall to catch a getai spectacular boasting colourful costumes, electrifying performances and elaborate stage designs. The art director for the show was acclaimed Singapore movie director Royston Tan whose latest movie "3688" was well received by both critics and viewers. 

Some of Singapore's most popular and talented getai artistes such as Liu Ling Ling, Jacky Chin, Hao Hao and Lee Pei Fen took turns to entertain the audiences. 

SPH's Chinese Media Group (CMG) has been a supporter of President’s Challenge since 2002. CMG has organised many community events to raise funds for President's Challenge, namely the National Treasure Hunt; Show You Care, Buy a Bear; the ZPop Charity Concert, a series of Youth Talent Concerts; Charity Gala Dinner and Charity Dance Drama. 

Last year, CMG organised two charity events for President's Challenge - Charity Fun Walk 2014 and the sale of the replicas of the Singapore panoramic artwork by British artist and autistic savant Stephen Wiltshire.

SPH, as a group, has also supported President's Challenge as a media sponsor through the years with sponsorship of advertisement space in major newspapers such as The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.

The highlight for this year's Getai Awards was the special award category to recognise the contribution of getai artistes who have been in the getai scene for more than 40 years. Receiving the inaugural Contribution Award (歌台贡献奖) were Mr Wong Kee Meng (黄清元) and Ming Zhu Sisters (明珠姐妹). 

On top of the Contribution Award, there were 29 awards, divided into "Most Popular" and "Best" categories, which were given out at the awards ceremony. The 24 "Most Popular" awards were based on votes cast by readers of both evening dailies, as well as online voting. 

Apart from the "Most Popular" awards, a panel of judges, comprising SPH journalists from both Chinese evening newspapers, as well as local media industry experts, picked five winners for the "Best" category.
