Back organises forum on Malay language and literary appreciation night to celebrate Malay Language Month

Singapore, 1 October 2015 – Berita Harian celebrates the Malay Language Month with two key events showcasing the beauty, vibrancy and universality of the Malay language, culture and heritage.

A forum on Malay language and a literary appreciation night will be held at SPH Auditorium, News Centre, 1000 Toa Payoh North, on Tuesday, 6 October 2015.

The forum, Wacana, which will be held between 5pm to 7pm
, will feature four renowned panelists:
· Dr Mohd Aidil Subhan Mohd Sulor (Lecturer, NIE)
· Dr Shamsuri Juhari (Lecturer, UniSIM)
· Mohd Raman Daud (Senior Writer); and,
· Rilla Melati Bahri (Celebrity/Entreprenuer)

The theme for the forum is: Is the Malay language still relevant in this digital era?

During the two-hour session, the panelists will discuss, among other things, the challenges and issues faced by the community in using the Malay language in this ever-changing global digital landscape; the evolution of the language, its progress and decline; and its usage and relevance.

The speakers will also discuss the importance of the Malay language to fully cater to the needs of communication among the younger generation in various sectors, including business and preservation of heritage and traditional cultures.

The event will provide participants with the opportunity to learn from experts on ways to promote the use of the Malay language at home and enriching their children or students’ language capacity, and appreciation of Malay literature and culture through a variety of enrichment activities. Minister for Communication and Information, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, is the Guest of Honour.

The event is open free to public. To register, please go to

Following that, Berita Harian will be organising Malam Sastera where the evening will be filled with literary performances by well-known writers, poets and celebrities.

Unlike last year's edition, where regional and internationally-acclaimed poets were featured, the two-hour event this year will feature critically-acclaimed actor-director Rafaat Hamzah. Rafaat won the Best Lead Actor Award at Pesta Perdana 11 for his role in the drama Kalimah Terakhir in 2011. Pesta Perdana is a local award show which honours the best in the Malay television industry.

The evening will also see Art Fazil and Mohd Khair Mohd Yasin returning as Rausyanfikir (Persian term for ‘Thinkers’), where the folk group made its name with their albums in the 90s and sold more than 25,000 copies in Malaysia and Singapore. Three well-known television and radio personalities, M Saffri A Manaf, Norsiah Abdul Hamid and Mastura Ahmad will provide a first-hand opportunity to the audience on how a radio drama is produced ‘live’. Not to be missed too are Singapore’s very-own pantun masters GT Lye and Mohd Ashik, who will show-off their talents in the art of ‘buying’ and ‘selling’ of pantun – an epigrammatic stanza or a poetic sentence, consisting of four short lines rhyming alternately, in which the thought is expressed by comparison or allusion.

Mr Amrin Amin, Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Member of Parliament for Chua Chu Kang GRC and chairman of the organising committee of Malay Language Month, will be the special guests gracing the event.
