Best of getai talents honoured at Shin Min/ Wanbao Getai Awards 2015

Singapore, 1 October 2015 --- Some of Singapore's most popular getai stars will be honoured at the Shin Min / Wanbao Getai Awards 2015 《新明/晚报歌台红星大奖颁奖礼2015》 on Sunday, 4 October.

Organised by Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese evening newspapers Shin Min Daily News and Lianhe Wanbao, the annual awards honour the best getai talents in the local entertainment scene. Getai, or live stage performance, is unique to Singapore and is usually performed during the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

Following the success of last year‘s first indoor show cum awards ceremony, the 6th Getai Awards will be held at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre once again, befitting its status as the premier getai awards event in Singapore. The awards ceremony is expected to draw a turnout of over 6000 people.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam will be the Guest of Honour and Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development, will be the Special Guest at the event.

Ms Tan Geok Keow, Chairman of the Organising Committee and Assistant Editor of Central Integrated Newsroom, SPH Chinese Media Group (CMG), said: "The objective of this event is to raise the awareness of our local getai artistes and promote traditional Chinese culture. In addition, the event is also organised for a good cause to raise funds for charity. This year, the amount raised through ticket sales and donations from individuals and corporate organisations will be donated to President’s Challenge 2015."

President’s Challenge, launched in 2000, is a series of charity events to rally Singaporeans from all walks of life to help raise funds for the social service sector. SPH Chinese Media Group (CMG) is a supporter of President’s Challenge. Since 2002, CMG has organised many community events to raise funds for President's Challenge, namely the National Treasure Hunt; Show You Care, Buy a Bear; the ZPop Charity Concert, a series of Youth Talent Concerts; Charity Gala Dinner and Charity Dance Drama.

Last year, CMG raised close to $250,000 for President’s Challenge through two charity events - Charity Fun Walk 2014 and the sale of the replicas of the Singapore panoramic artwork by British artist and autistic savant Stephen Wiltshire. All proceeds were donated to President's Challenge 2014 to benefit 64 charity organisations.

SPH, as a group, has also supported President's Challenge as a media sponsor through the years with sponsorship of advertisement space in major newspapers such as The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.

Individual and corporate donors of President’s Challenge 2015 are as follows:

1) Straco Corporation Limited

2) Hi-P International Limited

3) Best World International

4) Mr Robson Lee Teck Leng

5) Mr Toh Soon Huat BBM

The highlight for this year's Getai Awards is the special award category to recognise the contribution of getai artistes who have been in the getai scene for more than 40 years. The two winners for this inaugural Contribution Award (贡献奖) will be announced at the awards ceremony.

On top of the Contribution Award, there are 29 awards, divided into "Most Popular" and "Best" categories, which will be given out at the awards ceremony. The 24 "Most Popular" awards are based on votes cast by readers of both evening dailies, as well as online voting. Please refer to Annex 1 for the 20 Most Popular Singers. The rest of the winners will be announced at the awards ceremony.

Apart from the "Most Popular" awards, a panel of judges comprising SPH journalists from both Chinese evening newspapers, as well as local media industry experts, has picked five winners for the "Best" category. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony.
