"For The Love of Newspaper Advertisements - 50 Years of Newsprint Creativity" exhibition held at Paragon
Singapore, 23 September 2015 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) today launched a unique exhibition showcasing 50 years of newsprint creativity in its newspaper advertisements. The exhibition runs from today till30 September at Paragon from 10am to 10pm daily. It is open to the public and admission is free.
Titled "For The Love of Newspaper Advertisements - 50 Years of Newsprint Creativity", the week-long exhibition features a collection of significant newspaper advertisements from the last 50 years. It will transport visitors across five decades, offering them a rich selection of iconic and nostalgic newspaper advertisements.
1965 – 1974This segment of the showcase presents inspiring and significant newspaper advertisements from the mostly “Black and White” era when the Beatles reigned.1975 – 1984With Singapore’s growing prosperity as an industrial nation, spot and full-colour advertisements began to take shape.1985 – 1994During this “Pop-culture-domination” period when Michael Jackson was huge, a boom of creativity saw innovations including scented ink, luminous ink, and the rise of creative buys. This decade of advertisements evolved to be more thought-provoking and encompassed better craftsmanship in visuals and copy.1995 – 2004A first-world country that now looks at advertisements from a more sophisticated angle, full-colour advertisements became a norm in this decade, with storytelling gradually incorporated into unified, customer-centric advertising messages.2005 – 2015A progress into the digital age resulted in “information overload” and spurred an influx of eye-catching visual-dominated advertising styles with an emphasis on storytelling. Newsprint advertisements became increasingly enhanced with new-age technologies to engage readers in a multi-sensorial experience.Ms Elsie Chua, Executive Vice-President and Head of Marketing Division at SPH, said: "Newspaper advertising has been a part of Singaporeans' lives for a long time. Through this exhibition, SPH celebrates 50 years of newsprint creativity that has accompanied us over the years as an independent nation. We hope that everyone will join us at Paragon to revisit some of the classic advertisements which can bring back fond memories about the past."
Advertisements that visitors can see at the exhibition include a Ribena ad from 1965 and a Gardenia ad from 1984. The exhibition will also feature engaging videos and inspirational quotes from top professionals in the advertising industry, as well as other exhibits that demonstrate how brands have chosen newspapers to communicate their messages and how advertising has evolved over the years.
In addition, visitors will be shown different types of innovative creative buys incorporating new-age technologies including Translucent Wrap, Augmented Reality and Three-Dimensional (3-D) features, Luminous Ink and more.
