Her World honours Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Zuraidah Abdullah and award-winning fashion designer Priscilla Shunmugam as its Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever 2015

Singapore, 21 August 2015 – Her World, Singapore’s No. 1 women’s magazine, published by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd (SPH Magazines), presented the prestigious Her World Woman of the Year and Young Woman Achiever Awards 2015 at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore tonight. Mdm Halimah Yacob, Speaker of Parliament was the event’s Guest of Honour.

Her World magazine, a monthly title read by the stylish achiever, prides itself in being the voice of the Singapore woman. Every month, it engages its readers with exciting reads about dynamic women pursuing exceptional work and sharing inspiring experiences.

Her World has given out the Her World Woman of the Year award and the Her World Young Woman Achiever award since 1991 and 1999 respectively. The two prestigious awards recognise the achievements of women who are inspirational role models to other women.

The Her World Woman of the Year award recognises a woman whose outstanding achievements have brought her to public notice and earned her wide respect. She projects the best of Singapore at home and abroad, and her accomplishments will leave a lasting impression. She is an inspiration and role model to other women. Past winners include Professor Chan Heng Chee (1991), Ms Jennie Chua (1999), Dr Noeleen Heyzer (2007), Professor Ivy Ng (2011/12) and Ms Rachel Eng (2014).

The Her World Woman of the Year 2015 is Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Zuraidah Abdullah.

Last year, she became the first woman to be appointed Commander of the Airport Police Division, where she is in charge of the security of all three terminals and the safety of the 50 million-plus passengers that pass through Changi Airport every year.

Her 29-year career began in 1986 when she saw an ad for the Singapore Police Force (SPF) that said “join the police force – every day is different”. She signed up, was called back within a week and became the first Malay graduate – and only the sixth woman – to join the SPF through its direct entry programme.

Since then, the National University of Singapore civil engineering graduate has risen through the ranks and held head appointments at the Central Police Division, Jurong Police Division and Training Command. In 2013, she became the first woman to hold the rank of Senior Assistant Commissioner – the third highest rank in the Singapore Police Force.

“This award means a lot, because it is a recognition of the work that women do and the contributions of women in the workforce. It’s not just about me, but also the women in a similar area of work,” said Zuraidah.

The Her World Young Woman Achiever award recognises a young woman who aims higher and reaches further to achieve more. Her achievements have surpassed existing boundaries, inspiring those around her and paving the way for others in the future. She has also demonstrated the potential for attaining a higher level of success in her chosen field.

The Her World Young Woman Achiever 2015 is Priscilla Shunmugam, 34, an award-winning fashion designer whose designs have been shown at Paris Fashion Week, the Audi Fashion Festival and Singapore Fashion Week.

The NUS law graduate, who hated sewing and only picked it up on a whim in 2008, launched her eponymous label, Ong Shunmugam, in 2010. In five short years, she has designed and released six collections, and sold close to 2,000 pieces.

This year, she was one of three local designers chosen to participate in Fashion Futures – a platform that gives Singaporean designers the opportunity to showcase and place their collections in some of the world’s most renowned international retailers. She was also appointed a Product Design jury member at the 2015 Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity. This makes her the first representative from Singapore to be on the Product Design jury.

“It’s nice to be able to look back at the last five years and feel a certain sense of accomplishment. When I first started Ong Shunmugam, I didn’t have a lot of money, experience or connections, so I was just relying on my internal abilities – whether you want to call it talent or having a good eye or the strength and will to do something,” said Priscilla.

Justin Cheong, deputy editor of Her World, said: “Every year, these two awards throw the spotlight on local women who are confident, empowered and inspiring, and have redefined success in their own ways. As the leading women's magazine in Singapore, Her World is very proud to inspire our readers with amazing success stories like these."

Mr Loh Yew Seng, CEO of SPH Magazines, said: "For 24 years, the Her World Woman of the Year awards has been an iconic event for Her World because an empowering women's magazine like ours goes hand in hand with today’s successful women who have come a long way in their careers. This year is even more special for us as we celebrate our 55th anniversary. We will continue to provide exceptional content and bring the awards into the next era."

The event was presented by Mercedes-Benz and sponsored by Estee Lauder and Girard Perregaux.
