31 recipients for SPH and SPH Foundation Scholarship awards

- 15 in-house scholarships given out to children of staff and news vendors
- 11 Lim Kim San Memorial scholarships awarded to students pursuing languages and humanities studies

Singapore, 20 July 2015 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SPH Foundation presented a total of 31 scholarships at their annual joint scholarship awards ceremony held at the SPH News Centre auditorium today.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, was the Guest-of-Honour at the event.

There were five recipients for the SPH Journalism Scholarships.

A total of 15 scholarships were also given out to the children of staff and newspaper vendors – five for junior college studies, four for polytechnic studies and six for university studies.

Dr Lee, in his opening address, said: “Although we now lead high-tech lifestyles in a world of mobility and multiple screens, the importance of professional journalism has not changed. There is a proliferation of news and information from various sources, particularly on the internet, in the fast paced environment that we live in today. Some of the facts and details are conflicting and questionable. This has strengthened the need and desire for trustworthy and reliable sources of news put together and verified by quality journalism. Professional journalists with the skills to investigate, report and analyse news that matters to the readers will always be in demand. This is what SPH assures its readers that it is capable of delivering every day."

Ms Prisca Ang, an SPH Journalism scholarship award recipient who will be doing a Bachelor of Communication Studies in Nanyang Technological University, said: “I am delighted to receive the journalism scholarship from SPH, as it would ease my family's financial burden while allowing me to pursue a career which constantly stretches and intrigues me. Over the past few months, I have interned at The Business Times, where I had a flavour of what life in a newsroom is like. I was also privileged to have many new experiences I wouldn't have been exposed to otherwise. From meeting company executives to exploring the factories of little-known SMEs and discovering more about our local startups, my assignments enabled me to be more conscious of the larger community around me. I am also very thankful for my supervisors and colleagues, who have offered me invaluable advice along the way.”

Since its inauguration in 2006, the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships are awarded annually. The bond-free scholarships have helped deserving students from modest family backgrounds further their degree programmes in languages, linguistics and the humanities at the local universities.  This year, there are 11 recipients receiving the Lim Kim San Memorial scholarships.

One of them is Mr Ong Jun He, who will be pursuing New Media and Communications at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He said:  "It's my honour to have received the scholarship. With the scholarship, I can now pursue my passion in the field of communications in NUS with lesser financial worries. In the near future, I also hope to use my understanding in social sciences and expertise in communications to help resolve social issues and particularly, better engage with communities that are not only less well off but also those that are hidden within our society."
