SPH donates food for strays and abandoned animals to animal welfare groups

Singapore, 4 June 2015 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has collected about 600 kg of food for Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD), Cat Welfare Society (CWS) and The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for its second edition of the pet food donation drive called “SPH Food For Furry Friends”.

Each year, pets get abandoned by irresponsible owners and contribute to the stray population.

While animal welfare groups like SPCA, CWS and ASD are trying to curb the population through sterilisation and adoption, the numbers continue to increase.

Through a month-long drive from 4 May to 3 June 2015, SPH has appealed to its staff to donate both dry and canned food.  The donations came from individual staff as well as business units across SPH.

Ms Corinne Fong, Executive Director, SPCA (Singapore), said: “We are all heartened by SPH’s very encouraging CSR programme that not only actively helps human-centred charities, but also recognises animal welfare causes. The SPCA hopes that SPH’s proactive and kind deeds will pave the way for many other home-grown organisations to do more for the animals in need. The food raised will certainly go a long way to help our shelter and community animals.”

Joining the collaboration for this first time are Action for Singapore Dogs and Cat Welfare Society.

Mr Ricky Yeo, President, Action for Singapore Dogs, said: “Food for the dogs under our care is always a critical aspect. We appreciate all the help we can get to support the 150 dogs under our care who consume 20kg of dog food a day!”

Ms Joanne Ng, CEO, Cat Welfare Society, said: “Through your kind donations, Cat Welfare Society will be able to help responsible caregivers islandwide defray some of the costs of feeding their community cats. Responsible caregivers are the backbone of our trap neuter return manage programme which saw 4,749 cats sterilised in 2014.”

This year, SPH also partners pet food distributor SG Pets Pte Ltd, which gave discounts to SPH staff who purchased the products for this cause, and provided free delivery to the animal welfare groups as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) objective.

Ms Rani, Managing Director, SG Pets Pte Ltd (distributor for Solid Gold in Asia) said: "At Solid Gold, we believe that all pets including the strays deserve the best. Our animal companions have given us much joy. We have made it our mission to return the favour by giving them what they deserve – premium, holistic, natural products that allow these amazing animals to look and feel great while they live life to the fullest.”

Ms Chin Soo Fang, Head, Corporate Communications & CSR division, SPH, said: "We initiated the animal food donation drive for SPCA last year, and were heartened by our staff's support and generosity.  This year, we wanted to make it bigger and better, with more animal welfare groups involved.  While our diverse CSR efforts have benefitted many human causes, we also hope to enhance the lives of our four-legged friends who are deprived of something very basic - food for survival."

The SPH Food For Furry Friends campaign is one of SPH’s CSR programmes that aim to do its part in strengthening social bonding and giving back to the community.
