SPH Charity Carnival 2015 supports various charitable causes

Singapore, 18 May 2015 - The SPH Charity Carnival 2015, an annual charity event organised by Singapore Press Holdings, was held today at SPH News Centre Auditorium.

Back for the 4th year, the SPH Charity Carnival supports various charitable causes - from helping the elderly, physically challenged, low income families, wildlife protection, animal welfare to the underprivileged in our society.

The event, which was held from 11am to 3pm today, is jointly organised by the Corporate Communications & CSR Division of SPH, together with the SPH Staff Volunteers Club.

This year, 16 charity organisations and social enterprises took part in the event to raise funds for various causes.  They included familiar names like The Salvation Army, Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN), World Wildlife Fund, Jamiyah Children's Home, SPCA, Action for Singapore Dogs, Cat Welfare Society and Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADEAF).  Charity organisations which participated for the first time were AMK FSC Bakery Hearts, Reach Community Services Society (Blooms of Hope) and Beyond Social Services.

Apart from external charities, SPH's various divisions and subsidiaries also set up stalls at the carnival to help raise funds for their adopted charities.

Staff visited the carnival, shopping for food, handicrafts and merchandises, as well as playing games at the various stalls. Some staff stopped by for a head and shoulder massage by visually-impaired masseurs from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH).

National athletes from the Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC) also made an appearance at the carnival. Boccia players Juni Syafiqa and Shahrizan, as well as Handcyclist Naren Sankar were there to raise awareness for SNPC. The two Boccia athletes gave a live demonstration of the sport. In addition, SNPC invited visitors to create a collaborative artwork. For a nominal donation to SNPC, they could participate in the creative process by stamping the Paralympic "swoosh" and writing words of encouragement for the athletes on the artwork.
