Singaporean designer is Harper’s BAZAAR Asia New Generation Fashion Designer Award 2015 winner

Singapore, 17 May 2015 – Singaporean designer Silvia Teh is the Harper’s BAZAAR Asia New Generation Fashion Designer Award winner this year. 

Hosted by Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, along with its regional counterparts from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, the Awards saw 10 young designers from the five countries vying for the top spot at the regional competition held at Ngee Ann City in Singapore on Saturday.

After an exciting show to over 650 guests, the regional winner was announced and awarded to Silvia Teh, 22, from Singapore.  Her winning theme was “Javanese meets Japanese”. 

“I'm ecstatic about my win. It's been eight months, and I initially thought I couldn't make it at the preliminary judging for the Singaporean contestants. Through the competition, I learnt how to do commercially viable designs. The first few sketches I did weren't exactly so. After some feedback, I tweaked my designs and turned them into clothes that women would want to wear. Now that I've won, I'm thinking of opening a workshop. Every designer needs one,” said Silvia.

Held during Singapore Fashion Week (SFW) 2015, the winner of the competition was awarded a scholarship for a Master’s degree in fashion from the prestigious Istituto Marangoni worth GBP26,700 or S$56,430, in either its Paris, London or Milan campus, as well as the opportunity to retail her collection to a global market through online retailer Inverted Edge. Over and above all these, Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore also sponsored $10,000 cash for Silvia Teh’s living expenses during her scholarship period.

They have paid such attention to details right down to their business plans and marketing strategy. I hope Singaporean students and fashion colleges take this regional win as a stamp of approval from the Bazaar editors in Asia. That's saying a lot because all the editors are well travelled and well versed in their own local fashion. For everyone to believe in Singaporean talent and to want it to succeed, I hope that it will give us a bigger and better pool of contestants to push out next year. We just have to believe that we are good - no not just good - we are winners!”

The Harper’s BAZAAR Asia New Generation Fashion Designer Award was launched with one objective: To discover and develop the skills of fashion’s new talents, while leveraging on this exciting project to find the next big designer from each country. Since the inaugural launch of the competition in 2013, the top finalists from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore have received immeasurable publicity and support from the industry: From having their collections featured in the pages of the magazine, to getting the opportunity to showcase them at Fashion Weeks in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and more around the region.
