Singapore Business Awards 2015 honours outstanding local business leaders

Singapore, 27 April 2015 – Ms Chew Gek Khim, Executive Chairman of The Straits Trading Company Limited and Tecity Group, has been named Businessman of the Year 2014 at this year’s Singapore Business Awards (SBA). 

Launched in 1985, the SBA has grown to be Singapore’s most prestigious business accolade. It is jointly organised by The Business Times, Singapore’s leading business daily; and DHL Express, the global market leader of the international express and logistics industry.

In addition to the Businessman of the Year award, the other awards in the SBA roll of honour are Outstanding Chief Executive of the Year, Outstanding Chief/Senior Executive (Overseas) of the Year and The Enterprise Award.

This is the first time in the awards’ 30-year history that two female winners have been recognised in the same year. 

Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Trade and Industry was the Guest-of-Honour at this evening's SBA 2015 presentation dinner at the Resorts World Sentosa. 

Mr Alvin Tay, Chairman of the SBA organising committee and Editor of The Business Times, said: “The last 30 years has seen the Singapore Business Awards pay tribute to the contributions of Singapore’s leading corporate leaders to the economy. Today’s winners have demonstrated outstanding leadership, dynamic vision, governance skills and a hands-on approach to management. With these attributes, they have achieved corporate excellence and success both in Singapore and internationally.  My heartiest congratulations to them as we welcome them onto the honour roll of the Singapore Business Awards fraternity.”

Outstanding Chief/Senior Executive (Overseas) of the Year 2014

Citation: For her leadership and passion in growing a medium-sized niche investment bank into a major integrated player in the Malaysian financial industry, and thus serving as a role model for Singaporeans working overseas.

Citation: For its enterprising spirit and innovativeness in growing from a single outlet back in 1985 to become a household name with 35 stores island-wide, notwithstanding 
the keen competition from bigger and more established supermarket chains in Singapore.
