New SPH Golf unit to launch monthly golf specials called Swing

Singapore, 1 April 2015 – To cater to growing demand and interest in the sport of golf, media group Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has formed a new unit called SPH Golf to run golf events as well as produce monthly golf specials to appear in three of its newspapers - English flagship The Straits Times, as well as The Business Times and The New Paper.

The new unit will be organising this year's Business Times Corporate Golf League starting in July and the Singapore qualifiers for the 2015 World Amateur Golfers Championship starting in September.

SPH Golf will also produce monthly golf specials under the new title of Swing in three of its English papersThe new specials will carry content from the world's leading golf magazine, Golf Digest, as well as some of Singapore's best known golf writers and commentators.

The first issue of Swing will appear on Friday April 3 in The New Paper, followed by The Business Times Weekend on April 4 and The Sunday Times on April 5.

Mr Patrick Daniel, Editor-in-Chief of the English/Malay/Tamil Media Group, said: "Swing will be a top quality monthly special that will run in three of our papers, so that we can best serve the large group of golfers in Singapore and also those in the golf industry. We will also promote and organise golf events such as the BT Corporate League, now into its 6th year, to help our partners build networks and gain new friends."

The new unit will be run by Mr Murali Subramaniam, the deputy editor of The New Paper, who is also one of SPH's best golfers. Mr Murali will concurrently be General Manager of SPH Golf and Editor of Swing. He will be assisted by Business Director Timothy Lim, Creative Editor Jacqueline Wu and Assistant Manager Clarice Bong.

Mr Murali said: "One of the biggest advantages that SPH Golf and Swing have is the wide readership and reach of our three English newspapers. The content in the three papers will vary to cater to their different audiences. We've lined up leading writers - like Godfrey Robert, Spencer Robinson, Rohit Brijnath, Tan Ju Kuang, Ven Sreenivasan and Rahul Pathak - to complement the top-notch content from Golf Digest. This publication will be very different from anything else in the market."

Mr Murali added that the Singapore qualifers for the World Amateur Golfers Championships (WAGC) will continue to scour the nation for the best team of amateur golfers of varying handicaps to represent Singapore in a world-class tournament. This year's WAGC finals will be held in Turkey from Nov 28 to Dec 5.

"Last year, the team that represented Singapore finished second in the world finals. We hope to do one better this time around!"
