National Chinese Challenge 2015 opens for registration

Singapore, 20 March 2015 --- National Chinese Challenge, the national Chinese language quiz, is back for the second year. 

It is jointly organised by Lianhe Zaobao and Nanyang Girls' High School, and co-presented by Business China, Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning, Tee Yih Jia Group, Promote Mandarin Council and Singapore Press Holdings Foundation.

Registration is now open for students from local secondary schools. The objective of the quiz is to promote Chinese culture and cultivate the interest in learning Chinese amongst students through a fun competition. 

Last year, a total of 760 Secondary 3 and 4 students took part in the inaugural competition.  The Challenge will test participants’ knowledge and application of Chinese translation, proverbs and idioms through pictures, pronunciation, literature, current affairs and general knowledge.

Participating for the first time this year is Presbyterian High School. They will be sending seven student representatives to compete in the quiz. Among them, Secondary Three student Ong Xin Ming expressed confidence in doing well in the competition. 

Xin Ming said: "I want to prove my ability in Chinese through the competition. I feel that my forte lies in my abundant grasp of Chinese phrases, but I am relatively weaker in terms of translation and current affairs knowledge, hence I have already started to prepare myself for the quiz." 

The competition is divided into three stages, namely the preliminary round, semi finals and grand finals. Participants have to be locally enrolled Secondary One to Five students, with no limit to number of representatives sent by each school. 

Due to overwhelming response, the closing date for registration has been extended to 27 March 2015 (Friday). The preliminary round will kick off on 10 April. 

The champion team stands to win $3000 cash and a trophy. The first runner-up will receive $2000 cash, a trophy, and one-year free subscription of Lianhe Zaobao, while the second runner-up will receive $1,000 and a trophy. The 30 students with the highest scores during the preliminary round will each receive an award of $50 and a certificate. All other participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Events and Out-of-Home Advertising

SPH REIT is a Singapore-based REIT established to invest in a portfolio of income-producing real estate primarily for retail purposes. SPH REIT comprises Paragon, a premier upscale retail mall and medical suite/office property in Orchard Road and The Clementi Mall, a mid-market suburban mall in the centre of Clementi town.

The Seletar Mall, located in Sengkang, is SPH's latest retail development. This property is a potential asset to be injected into SPH REIT. SPH’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Times Development Pte Ltd, also developed a 43-storey upmarket residential condominium, Sky@eleven, at Thomson Road.
