M1-THE STRAITS TIMES LIFE! THEATRE AWARDS 2015

SINGAPORE, 17 MARCH 2015 - The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards turn 15 this year with a brand new identity -  telecommunications company M1 Limited comes on board as title sponsor, giving rise to the new M1-The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards.

Singapore's premier theatre awards celebrates its 15th anniversary with a ceremony hosted by actress Pam Oei at the Esplanade Recital Studio on Monday, April 20. The event is held in collaboration with the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, and is part of The Studios: fifty series featuring 50 Singapore plays, which takes place from April 2 to May 10.

Comedies rule the roost this year, with Monkey Goes West, Wild Rice's rip-roaring musical take on Journey to the West garnering six nominations, and Art, a Mandarin adaptation of a French comedy about three friends clashing over an artwork, garnering five. It is a banner year for Wild Rice as it picks up four more nominations for The House of Bernarda Alba giving it a total of 10 nods. Pangdemonium follows closely with eight nominations, for Fat Pig, a comedy of upsized proportions, the musical The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice and the serial killer psychodrama Frozen. The awards also shine a light on smaller shows with shorter runs such as Dark Room x8 by actress and director Edith Podesta, an intimate look at inmates from Changi Prison, and visual spectacle Ten Thousand Tigers by artist and director Ho Tzu Nyen, with each receiving three nominations apiece.

As in previous years, readers will get a chance to vote for their choice of Production of the Year. Ten lucky readers will each win a pair of passes to the awards ceremony and a pair of tickets to one of the five full-length productions in The Studios: fifty. One of these readers will get a chance to win a weekend stay for two, inclusive of breakfast, at Singapore's first fully loft-inspired designer hotel, Studio M Hotel Singapore, sponsored by Millennium & Copthorne Hotels.

Ms Helen Chia, Editor of The Straits Times Life!, said: "Over the years, so many great productions and talented thespians have made us laugh and cry at the theatre. The Life! Theatre Awards have grown in tandem with the development of our exciting theatre scene, and we are happy to shine a spotlight on the best and brightest, as we celebrate our personal milestone in turning 15."

Mr Ivan Lim, Director of Corporate Communications, M1 Limited, said: "We believe in the power of the arts to move and connect people, as well as to enrich our society, and this has driven our passionate long-term support of Singapore's arts scene through partnerships with homegrown arts groups such as The Necessary Stage, T.H.E Dance Company, Frontier Danceland, and The Theatre Practice. Singapore’s theatre scene has come a long way, and we are pleased to partner The Straits Times to stage the M1-The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards, to further increase the accessibility and appreciation of Singapore theatre."

Ms Yvonne Tham, Assistant Chief Executive Officer of The Esplanade Co Ltd, says: “As we mark the nation’s 50
th birthday, we want to celebrate our short but rich history of playwriting and theatre-making. As part of our special season of The Studios: fifty, Esplanade will be presenting 50 notable works that have shaped the theatre scene and shifted practices in Singapore. We hope audiences will come to reflect, imagine and understand the world around us, our society and ourselves, through these notable works, many of which have been recognised by the Life! Theatre Awards. So when we were invited to collaborate with Life! Theatre Awards this year, we were most happy to support. We also look forward to welcoming Singapore’s theatre community at Esplanade during the awards to celebrate together our history of theatre-making.”

The awards are judged by a six-member panel comprising LASALLE College of the Arts provost Venka Purushothaman; online arts journal The Flying Inkpot co-editors Kenneth Kwok and Matthew Lyon; as well as arts reviewers from The Business Times, Lianhe Zaobao and The Straits Times, Helmi Yusof, Tang Hwa Kwee and Corrie Tan.
