They ran alongside an SG50 contingent, conquering every obstacle in the 14km race with skill and panache.
Singapore, 1 March 2015 — The Men’s Health Urbanathlon, an obstacle race organised by SPH Magazines, celebrated Singapore’s 50th birthday with noteworthy Singaporean personalities displaying their mental toughness and physical endurance that is the cornerstone of five decades of nation-building.
Co-organised by sports event management company HiVelocity, the annual race tested the fitness of Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry Teo Ser Luck and pioneering mountaineer Edwin Siew – just to name a few – running alongside other personalities and 3,700 participants.
In addition, participants also took on brand new obstacles like Tipping Point, where Urbanathletes negotiated a narrow see-sawing plank; Wheel & Deal, where participants squeezed through hanging tyres; and Bottom Line, where runners traversed a slackline. The Mystery Obstacle, only unveiled on the race day, required Urbanathletes to climb up a six-metre structure and jump from a second-storey height, ending the Urbanathlon on a high note. (See Fact Sheet for full descriptions of obstacles.)
Individual category winners
At the end of the race, this year’s individual category was won by Gurung Nimesh with a timing of 54 minutes and 35 seconds. He walked home with over $7,000 worth of prizes. Clinching the second place with a timing of 56 minutes and 20 seconds was Juresh Tilija, while Birjung Budha took third place with a timing of 57 minutes and 19 seconds.
Corporate category champion
More than 160 teams raced in the corporate category, each comprising three to five runners, all slugging it out for the grand prize worth over $18,000. The team Gurkha emerged victorious while the teams Ministry of Home Affairs and Singapore Police Force took second and third place respectively.
Running for Singapore
The Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2015 was specially marked with several Singapore personalities, running together as an SG50 contingent with other Singaporeans who have contributed to nation building. These were personalities such as Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry Teo Ser Luck, Singapore mountaineer Edwin Siew, SCDF personnel Francis Tan, and para-athlete “Blade Runner” Shariff Abdullah.
For Mr Teo, his experience proved exceptionally fun. "I had a lot of fun clearing the obstacles," the 46-year-old said. “It’s unlike any running race. The Mystery Obstacle was really fun, especially the part where you jump down. I also had fun at the obstacle where you slide down a rope like a fireman.”
It was also heartwarming to hear the cheers of supporters as Urbanathletes crossed the finished line in an amazing display of grit and determination.
Ms Pang Lee Cheng, General Manager, SPH Magazines, said: “It’s heartening to see everyone having fun, and meet loyal readers and participants who keep coming back year after year. We’ll continue to ensure the race continues to pique the interest of Singapore’s running community. The support from our sponsors is also testament to a successful event that provides a platform for all parties while promoting health and fitness.”
Mr Teh Yik Chuan, Director of Sales & Marketing of Tigerair, said: “It’s great to be here in a community of people with very healthy lifestyles, who are open to going on adventures and exploring the world. We have the opportunity to excite lots of people with destinations they may not have heard of. This is definitely a great event for us. We’re happy to come back next year.”
The excitement did not end after runners completed their race. After collecting their finishers’ T-shirts and medals, the participants enjoyed a feast of food and beer, and tried out various games at the race village to win attractive prizes including Tigerair tickets. They also got a chance to take a unique selfie using an aerial drone – a first in Singapore.
The Men’s Health Urbanathlon is jointly organised by SPH Magazines and HiVelocity, and presented by Tigerair. Adidas is the official apparel of this race, which is also supported by SportSG. The main sponsors include 100 Plus, Casio Exilim, Goodyear, Kwikset, Lab Series, Nautica Watches, Polar, True Fitness and Urban Homme. The partners are AXA, Jermyn Street and Swiss Oats.
