Sponsors take on an active role in Sing50 concert

SINGAPORE, 12 January 2015 – Mapletree Investments Pte Ltd (Mapletree), Resorts World Sentosa and Zurich Insurance have come on board as major sponsors of the Sing50 mega concert to be held as part of Singapore's Golden Jubilee celebrations this year.

Jointly organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and the SG50 committee, Sing50 is a showcase of 50 years of Singapore songs and music. The inter-generational concert, which is expected to draw some 50,000 people to the National Stadium on Aug 7 evening, will feature a 120-strong orchestra backed by a 1,000-member choir, well-known home-grown artistes and fresh talents, 100 rappers and a 50-Steinway grand piano spectacular performance.

The three sponsors are providing monetary support for the concert and their representatives are also actively involved in Sing50's various sub-committees working on staging the concert and extending its reach to schools and the community. There is an ongoing call for musicians, choir singers, pianists and rappers to be part of the concert.

Mapletree is the  presenter of Sing50, with a sponsorship of S$1 million. Mr Hiew Yoon Khong, Group Chief Executive Officer of Mapletree, said: “On Singapore’s 50th year of independence, we feel it is very appropriate to celebrate the Singapore spirit by supporting a concert which showcases the much-loved and popular Singapore songs and talents that most of us grew up with. Many of these songs reflect our common aspirations, which will further reinforce the bond among Singaporeans. We fully support the organisers’ vision and plans to get a large group of Singaporeans, young and old, to be a part of the concert.”

As Mapletree is a keen supporter of education causes and local artistic talent, Mr Hiew said he is glad that the organisers will be working closely with schools "to not only build appreciation for Singapore songs, but also actively encourage more music talent to be nurtured and developed."

Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is the supporting presenter of Sing50 with a sponsorship of S$500,000. The integrated resort will also provide venue spaces to create more buzz in the run-up to the concert.

Mr Tan Hee Teck, Chief Executive Officer of RWS, said: “At Resorts World Sentosa, we are passionate about inspiring others to give back to the local community by improving lives and bringing hope to the less fortunate in Singapore. As such, we hope to take the lead in volunteerism by contributing our team’s expertise and experience to help put together one of the nation’s biggest concerts. On top of volunteering on the various Sing50 organising sub-committees, we are also excited to provide a welcoming platform for budding talents to showcase their music skills.“

He said the event is an excellent platform to promote Singapore music and talent, and added: "Sing50 is not just a celebration of Singapore music over the last five decadesWe hope the concert will inspire the young to pursue their dreams in carving a music career."

Mr Jonathan Rake, Chief Executive Officer of Zurich’s General Insurance business in Singapore, said: “We are honoured to be supporting this great initiative in both a meaningful monetary and non-monetary way. We look forward to fully contributing to the various Sing50 committees on which we are active and working with all those involved to deliver greater value and benefit for the people of Singapore.”

Zurich will donate S$5 for every member of the audience at the concert. The proceeds will go towards two children charities – The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund.

Mr Peter Huber, Chief Executive Officer of Zurich’s Life Insurance business in Singapore, said: “Sing50 is a great celebration of Singapore’s rich and colourful history and our support complements Zurich’s commitment to this market and community. We pride ourselves on being a company that contributes to wider societal goals and this partnership is another sign of how we strive to continually improve our positive impact on Singapore’s society.”

Thanking the sponsors, Mr Alvin Tay, The Business Times Editor who co-chairs the Sing50 organising committee with The Straits Times Deputy Editor Alan John, said: "SG50 is a time to look back at how far Singapore has come - and what better way to do it than through the songs that marked our journeys and made them more joyful. I can't thank the three sponsors - Mapletree Investments, Resorts World Sentosa and Zurich Insurance  - enough for their extraordinary commitment and generosity to the Sing50 concert."
