Fifth batch of Singapore Hawker Masters unveiled

Singapore, 18 December, 2014 – The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao today announced the much-awaited results of the Singapore Hawker Masters 2014 at an awards ceremony held at The Pavilion, Far East Square. 

Six new Hawker Masters received their awards from Guest-of-Honour Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-At-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

The Singapore Hawker Masters, now into its fifth year, is an annual search for the best hawkers in various categories. Hawker Masters for different categories will be awarded each year. This year, the categories are Beef Noodle, Fish Soup, Indian Mee Goreng, Lor Mee, Mee Soto and Popiah.


The search for this year’s Singapore Hawker Masters kicked off in late August, with over 600 nominations received from the public. In September and October, top nominees from individual categories, together with some nominated by the panel of judges, were listed in The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao for public voting. Over 2,000 readers cast their votes to determine the three finalists in each category.

The search culminated in November when a panel of eight judges visited the finalists’ stalls to decide who would be named a Singapore Hawker Master.

The six Singapore Hawker Masters' stalls* are as follows:

The panel of judges comprised Professor Tommy Koh; Mr Dennis Wee, Chairman of Dennis Wee Group; Ms Violet Oon, Director, Violet Oon's Kitchen and Food Consultant; Mr Chia Boon Pin, President, Far East Food Concepts; Mr Steven Yeong, COO/Director of River Inn Group; Ms Tan Hsueh Yun, Food Editor of The Straits Times Life!; Mr Wong Ah Yoke, Executive Sub-Editor, The Straits Times Life! and Mr Marcus Yeo Chuan Liang, Food Correspondent of Lianhe Zaobao. 


Professor Koh said: “Singapore’s hawker food deserves to be recognised as a world heritage food.
 My congratulations to the Masters.”

SPH’s events arm Sphere Exhibits organises innovative consumer and trade events and exhibitions as well as large scale conferences in Singapore and the region. In addition, SPH has ventured into out-of-home (OOH) advertising through its digital out-of-home platform SPHMBO.

Properties 
SPH REIT is a Singapore-based REIT established to invest in a portfolio of income-producing real estate primarily for retail purposes in Asia-Pacific. SPH REIT is managed by SPH REIT Management Pte Ltd, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SPH.

The initial portfolio of SPH REIT comprises:
