Singapore, 7 October 2014 - The five amateur golfers set to represent Singapore at the World Golfers Championship (WGC) 2014 have been unveiled. They were crowned as the individual champions in the handicap division they were competing in at the Singapore Press Holdings WGC 2014 held this afternoon at the Sentosa’s Serapong course.
1) Division A - Mr Cody Lim, score 72 - playing in the 0 - 5.4 handicap division 2) Division B - Mr Sushminder Singh, score 75 - playing in the 5.5 - 10.4 handicap division 3) Division C - Mr Brian Chen, score 82 - playing in the 10.5 - 15.4 handicap division 4) Division D - Mr Tan Horng Chiang, score 88 - playing in the 15.5 - 20.4 handicap division 5) Division E - Mr David Seow, score 84 - playing in the 20.5 - 25.4 handicap divisionThis is the first time SPH has organised the qualifiers for the World Golfers Championships. The SPH WGC 2014 is the national qualifier for the WGC tournament that takes place this year at Durban, South Africa from the 1st to 8th November. This year marks the 20th edition of the WGC. The WGC offers a unique playing format as it has different handicap divisions for golfers of varying abilities. At Durban, the golfers will play two practice rounds and four tournament rounds. They will compete for the team title as well as individual honours in their respective handicap divisions. Singapore won the WGC team event in 2008.The SPH WGC began with two qualifying rounds played in September at Sentosa’s Golf Club’s Tanjong Course. It attracted a total of 240 golfers over the two rounds, with the top 80 golfers playing in today’s finals round. The entry fees were $588 for each golfer, with an early bird price of $488. Those who wanted direct entry into the national finals paid $1,288 for the limited slots available. All golf participants received a one-year All-in-One print and digital subscription for The New Paper, a box of Titleist Velocity golf balls and other gifts worth more than $300. Other than their trip to the world finals, the five winners will be attired by sponsors Titleist and Footjoy. They will also receive coaching tips from one of Singapore’s top golf coaches, Mr M.
