Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese Newspapers Division raises close to $250,000 for President's Challenge 2014

Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese Newspapers Division raises close to $250,000 for President's Challenge 2014

Singapore, 10 September 2014 --- The Chinese Newspapers Division (CND) of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has raised close to $250,000 for President's Challenge 2014.

The donations are from two charity events organised by CND - Charity Fun Walk 2014 and the sale of the replicas of the Singapore panoramic artwork by British artist and autistic savant Stephen Wiltshire. All proceeds will be donated to President's Challenge 2014 to benefit 64 charity organisations.

Guest of Honour President Tony Tan Keng Yam will flag off the Charity Fun Walk 2014 at Gardens by the Bay on 13 September.  He will also thank 11 donors who have made a donation to receive a replica of the Singapore Skyline at the event. The 1.75km walk, organised in conjunction with Mid-Autumn Festival @ The Gardens, will see participants walk the iconic gardens amongst spectacular lantern displays.

About 1,000 participants will be taking part in this non-competitive charity walk. The registration fees are $10 (including walk, souvenir and lucky draw) and $20 (including walk, souvenir, lucky draw and buffet reception). Proceeds from the participants’ registration fees will go to President’s Challenge 2014.

The Singapore panoramic artwork drawn by Stephen Wiltshire was commissioned by Singapore Press Holdings as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations this year. The original 4m X 1m Singapore panorama was drawn by Mr Wiltshire from memory after a brief RSAF helicopter ride in July. The event, called See The Big Picture, saw the British artist draw the Singapore skyline in full view of the public at Paragon from 16 to 20 July.   The event attracted more than 150,000 visitors over 5 days.

The original artwork was presented to President Tony Tan Keng Yam on 9 September 2014 as a gift to the nation to mark Singapore's 50th birthday. It is currently housed at the URA Singapore City Gallery.

The replicas of the Singapore skyline, each measuring 2m X 0.5m, are sold at $20,000 each to 11 donors. The sale of the replicas raised $220,000 for President's Challenge 2014.

Back for the 15th year, President’s Challenge, launched in 2000, is a series of charity events to rally Singaporeans from all walks of life to help raise funds for the social service sector.

Since 2002, CND has organised many community events to raise funds for President's Challenge, namely the National Treasure Hunt; Show You Care, Buy a Bear; the ZPop Charity Concert, a series of Youth Talent Concerts; Charity Gala Dinner and Charity Dance Drama. In 2012, CND organised the Tap & Donate campaign to raise funds through EZ-Link cards. The Charity Fun Walk at Gardens by the Bay was launched last year to raise funds.

SPH, as a group, has also supported President's Challenge as a media sponsor through the years with sponsorship of advertisement space in major newspapers such as The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.
