Results of inaugural Singapore Heartland Enterprise Star Award announced

Singapore, 25 April 2014 – The results of the inaugural Singapore Heartland Enterprise Star Award (新加坡邻里企业之星奖), jointly organised by the Federation of Merchants’ Association, Singapore (FMAS), and Chinese evening daily newspaper Lianhe Wanbao, were announced today at the Shangri-La Hotel before 800 invited guests. Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education, was the Guest-of-Honour. 


Through the Singapore Heartland Enterprise Star Award, FMAS and Lianhe Wanbao would like to celebrate and highlight the successes of heartland enterprises ranging from neighbourhood confectionery shops, HDB coffee shops, minimarts or any other neighbourhood store. 


The organisers also wish to recognise the contributions of these heartland enterprises to the community, and let other heartland enterprises learn from the success stories of the winners. 

The award honours the top heartland enterprises for excellence in the following categories:

· Best Customer Service
· Best Marketer
· Best Visual Merchandising
· Most Innovative
· Most Franchisable
In addition, six heartland enterprises received the Heartland Heritage Enterprise Award. This award recognises the heartland enterprise as an expert in the trade and who has contributed significantly to conserving a legacy in Singapore for more than 20 years.

The award is open to all heartland operators including hawker centre stall owners, enterprises operating in shop-houses, HDB-managed malls and neighbourhood retail outlets. There are two main sections:

Promising Enterprise – with one to four establishments
Prominent Enterprise – with five or more establishments

All applicants must be a home-grown Singapore brand with at least 50 per cent of the operating outlets located in neighbourhood centres (non-mall), as well as be incorporated in Singapore with at least 30 per cent Singaporean or PR ownership. 


Mr Yeo Hiang Meng, President of the Federation of Merchants’ Association, Singapore, said: “FMAS recognises that it is crucial for neighbourhood enterprises to revitalise its image to be forward looking. By working with Lianhe Wanbao to organise the Singapore Heartland Enterprise Star Award, FMAS hopes to help neighbourhood enterprises heighten their market competitiveness and business exposure to achieve high performance in their business.”

Ms Lee Huay Leng, Editor of Lianhe Wanbao, said: “As a newspaper widely read by Singapore heartlanders, Lianhe Wanbao is proud to partner FMAS to organise the inaugural Singapore Heartland Enterprise Star Award. The operating environment has changed tremendously for heartland enterprises. Understanding that they face a lot of challenges, we hope to encourage and support them in this transformative process.”

Mr Peter Lim, CEO of Moneymax Financial Services Ltd and Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Singapore Heartland Enterprise Star Award 2014, said: “We hope the awards will spur neighbourhood enterprises to hone their competitiveness and elevate their image, and most importantly, to achieve high business performance. Together, we hope to create a cohesive community spirit and to improve the quality of life for all.”
