Business and corporate achievers honoured at Singapore Business Awards 2014

Singapore, 3 April 2014 - “Popiah king” Sam Goi, the man who built a business empire out of manufacturing spring-roll skins and a wide range of ready-to-eat Asian convenience foods, has been named the Businessman of the Year 2013, in the latest Singapore Business Awards (SBA).

Launched in 1985, the SBA has grown to be Singapore’s oldest and most prestigious business accolades. It is jointly organised by The Business Times, Singapore’s leading business daily; and DHL Express, the global market leader of the international express and logistics industry.

In addition to the Businessman of the Year, the other awards in the SBA roll of honour are Outstanding Chief Executive of the Year, Outstanding Overseas Chief Executive/Senior Executive of the Year and The Enterprise Award.

Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, the Acting Minister for Manpower, was the guest of honour at the award presentation ceremony and dinner at the Resorts World Sentosa on Thursday, April 3.

Mr Alvin Tay, Chairman of the SBA organising committee and Editor of The Business Times, said: “This year, as in previous years, the selection committee has identified another four distinguished Singapore businessmen and corporate executives. All four winners have demonstrated leadership, vision and entrepreneurial qualities at their best. We salute them and hope that they, together with SBA winners before them, will be like a shining beacon to all aspiring businessmen and entrepreneurs.”

Mr Herbert Vongpusanachai, Managing Director, DHL Express Singapore, added: “The winners have shown that with a clear vision and an entrepreneurial spirit to overcome any challenge that come their way, there is no better time to do business than now. A common denomination underlying their successes is constant innovation, which is the only way to compete in the vibrant global marketplace. All these attributes are those that DHL honours and upholds.”

Citation:

For his entrepreneurial spirit and far-sightedness in acquiring Tee Yih Jia in 1977 and transforming it from a small, labour intensive factory into the world's leading manufacturer of popiah skins and frozen foods, with state-of-the-art production facilities in Singapore, Malaysia, China and the United States; and also for building the Yangzhou Yunhe Real Estate Group as one of the best property developers in southern China.

 

Outstanding Chief Executive of the Year 2013

Citation:

For his outstanding leadership and vision in diversifying ST Engineering into an integrated and globalised defence and engineering company, with rising revenues, a total workforce of 23,000 people and a network of 100 subsidiaries and associated companies in 46 cities across 24 countries.

 

Outstanding Chief/Senior Executive (Overseas) of the Year 2013

Citation:

For his passion and outstanding leadership in sustaining McDonald's business in China and developing it into a highly profitable and powerful foreign brand in the country, and for being an outstanding role model for Singaporeans working overseas.

Citation:

For its enterprising spirit and innovativeness in transforming from a small enterprise based in a shophouse in 1981 to a leading maintenance, repair and overhaul solutions provider, serving some of the largest companies in the global oil and gas industry.
