Singapore, - Sphere Conferences, the conference arm of Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH), today organised the inaugural healthcare conference Patient Care Asia 2013, attended by over 200 international senior healthcare professionals from more than 40 hospitals. The event is held at the Marina Bay Sands Singapore from .
Interest in the healthcare industry is growing rapidly, driving it to be a focal sector in Asia. Its rapid growth is attributed to the increased awareness of quality healthcare, growing middle class and more affluent consumers, and higher life expectancy. Frost and Sullivan figures showed that Singapore will increase its healthcare spending by 6 per cent annually to reach US$ 12.6 billion by 2015. With the new expectation for quality healthcare and improved patient experience, healthcare institutions will focus primarily on patient-centered care.
Patient Care Asia 2013 serves as a platform for international healthcare professionals to learn and develop strategies in creating more efficient operational systems, processes and technologies for patient care delivery. The conference focuses on patient safety, patient management, and patient experience, where healthcare leaders continue to enhance, excel and hone quality standards in healthcare delivery and patient care in Asia.
The key issues discussed at the conference include:
Several key industry experts and renowned leaders from local and overseas healthcare institutions spoke and shared their insights at the event:
Prof. Philip Choo, Chief Executive Officer of Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore, said: “Technological advancements, globalisation, policy shifts as well as demographic transformations mean we need to move from legacy models of care rooted in a hospital-centric approach to integrate hospitals and major healthcare service providers in a robust network. Only then can we deal with tomorrow’s healthcare issues effectively in a smart, synergistic and, at the same time, more caring and empathetic way.”
Mr. Phua Tien Beng, Chief Operating Officer of Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore, said: “Patient-centered care is key to patient satisfaction. However, it cannot be bought with money or learnt from books, it requires close partnership with patients and relentless pursuit.”
One of the highlights of Patient Care Asia 2013 is the patient’s perspective segment, featuring Mr. Andrew Fiu, the author of “Purple Heart”, a memoir detailing his years of stay in a hospital. As a patient with six open heart surgeries, he shared his experiences and thoughts on ways that healthcare organisations and medical personnel could make a tremendous difference to the wellbeing of patients under their care.
Ms. Patricia Cheong, General Manager of Sphere Conferences, said: “The sheer scale of developing economies in Asia has turned global healthcare leaders’ attention to the provision of quality medical services and patient-oriented care. Singapore has been developing as a medical hub in Asia, providing quality medical expertise and healthcare services in the region. through implementation of modern and digitised medical facilities and healthcare systems to meet the increasing healthcare demand. With engaging panel discussions and successful case studies, Patient Care Asia 2013 provides the perfect platform for healthcare service leaders to exchange ideas and collaborate in achieving greater excellence in healthcare delivery.”
