Titled Lee Kuan Yew: A Life in Pictures, the 268-page coffee-table book contains a curated collection of about 480 photographs that tell the story of the man who transformed an improbable country into the thriving metropolis that Singapore now is.
Published by Straits Times Press, the book publishing subsidiary of SPH, the book includes more than 100 never-before-published pictures, some from the former Prime Minister’s personal and family albums that capture private moments between Mr Lee and his late wife Kwa Geok Choo, as well as their three children.
The book was presented to Mr Lee at his Istana office today by SPH CEO Alan Chan.
A team from The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao began work in January this year to put the book together. The project was led by The Straits Times Picture Editor Stephanie Yeow, and included Straits Times correspondent Cassandra Chew, senior writer Leong Weng Kam, Lianhe Zaobao’s News Editor Han Yong May and executive photographer Spencer Chung. The book was designed by The Straits Times senior executive artist Sally Lam. Han Fook Kwang, Managing Editor of the English/Malay Newspapers Division (EMND) oversaw the project.
The team sourced for images from Mr Lee’s family, old friends, colleagues, grassroots leaders, government agencies and even collectors of Lee Kuan Yew paraphernalia. The result is a pictorial spread that not only covers the breadth of Mr Lee’s achievements, but also reveals his more intimate side.
The book has six chapters. His personal life and relationship with his wife are featured in the first and last chapters respectively. The remaining four chapters focus on key stages of Mr Lee’s life - his role in steering Singapore on its road to independence, his role in building a nation, Mr Lee as a statesman, and his post-Prime Minister years.
It includes six large format picture spreads that focus on various themes, such as Mr Lee’s relationship with his elder son Hsien Loong, now Singapore’s Prime Minister, his obsession with fitness, his many portraits through the years, and Mr Lee as the veteran election campaigner.
Mr Patrick Daniel, Editor-in-Chief of the EMND, said: "This is a book we are proud to be publishing. It offers readers a pictorial history of Singapore through the life of its founding Prime Minister. It's truly a collector's item for all Singaporeans and for anyone interested in the story of Singapore."
The book will be available at all leading bookstores for $70 (inclusive of GST) from .
