Singapore, 30 May 2013 – The Singapore Book Fair 2013 （新加坡书展）will open on
The annual event, which will be held till , is open from daily. Admission is free.
About 150 publishers across Asia will be showcased this year, together with a wide range of education materials, teaching resources, supplementary materials, periodicals, enrichment programmes and computer software.
In addition, renowned local and foreign writers will speak at daily seminars on a wide range of topics including lifestyle, parenting and health. Some of these speakers include Master Xiao Hong Chi （萧宏慈老师), a Chinese specialist in La Jin Pai Da Therapy （拉筋拍打), Dr Chen I-Chih（陈义芝博士),a popular Taiwanese poet, novelist Mdm Tsai Suh-Fen（蔡素芬女士),and editor of award-winning Taiwan publication Rhythms Monthly Mr Wang Chih-hong（王志宏总编辑), and best-selling author Shui Quan (水泉)from Taiwan.
For the first time in the history of Singapore Book Fair, a Book Swop will be organised for book lovers to exchange their books with other avid readers. Supported by the National Library Board (NLB), the Book Swop is organised following the overwhelming response of NLB's book swop held in April this year.
Back for the 28th year, the Singapore Book Fair is organised by Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese Newspapers Division (新加坡报业控股华文报集团) and supported by the Singapore Ministry of Education（新加坡教育部）, National Library Board（国家图书馆管理局),Lianhe Zaobao, Lianhe Wanbao, Shin Min Daily News, The Straits Times and UFM100.3.
In line with the objective of the Singapore Book Fair, which is to foster reading habit and inculcate the importance of education amongst the young, the organiser, with the support of Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, will issue S$50,000 worth of book vouchers to 1,000 children from low-income families. These children are from self-help groups including the Chinese Development Assistance Council, Mendaki, Sinda and the Singapore Eurasian Association. Each child will receive S$50 worth of book vouchers to purchase books and education materials.
Over 100,000 visitors are expected at the fair this year. Apart from the wide range of books, this year's event will also include book launches, meet-the-author sessions, educational talks and national school competitions.
Mr Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information, will be the Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony on . He will also present the Inspiring Chinese Language Teachers Award （全国模范华文教师奖）at the opening ceremony. There are a total of 9 winners this year. Refer to Annex A for details on the awards.
Highlights of Singapore Book Fair 2013
Wide Selection of Books, Magazines and Education Materials
There will be a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction titles in both English and Chinese for children and adults, as well as resource materials, magazines and supplementary books not commonly found in bookshops. Also available are a swathe of innovative products and interactive games to help children develop their mental and social skills through play.
For the first time, book lovers will have a chance to exchange their books with other avid readers. The Book Swop will be held from . Members of the public are encouraged to bring along their old books to the fair to participate in the Book Swop. A coupon will be issued for each book collected. The coupon can be used to exchange for other books. Fiction and non-fiction books in the four official languages are accepted. Textbooks, assessment books, magazines and audio-visual materials will not be accepted at the Book Swop. Each person will be entitled to a lucky dip for every 10 books exchanged. Overseas publishers including those from China, Taiwan and Malaysia will participate in this year's book fair. These publishers will offer a wide range of best-selling books. One of the main highlights this year is the genre of easy-reading "light novel" and illustrated fiction.
Exciting and Enriching Stage Activities
A host of activities will be organised at the Stage Area daily for visitors. These include:
(i) Educational Talks, Seminars, Meet-the-Author Sessions and Competitions
Master Xiao Hong Chi （萧宏慈老师),a Chinese specialist in La Jin Pai Da Therapy （拉筋拍打),will be giving two free talks and demonstrations on in Mandarin and English respectively. Master Xiao’s appearance at last year’s book fair drew a crowd of over 1,000 participants.
Taiwanese novelist Shui Quan （水泉）is one of the seminar speakers. Dr Chen I-Chih（陈义芝博士), a popular Taiwanese poet and novelist Mdm Tsai Suh-Fen（蔡素芬女士）will conduct a workshop for secondary school students on Chinese essay writing techniques and intellectual development. Ms Rosalind Drake from Planet A-Star will conduct a series of talks on methods on improving English writing and comprehension skills. Cognitive psychologist Mr Ric Chong will share his knowledge on how to improve student’s intelligence and academic performance.
Other speakers include Mr Liu Ka-shiang（刘克襄先生),nicknamed Bird Man（赏鸟达人）, best known for his award-winning poetry and publications on eco-tourism in Taiwan, TCM Physician Ms Yang Ling（杨玲医师）, Editor of award-winning Taiwan publication Rhythms Monthly Mr Wang Chih-hong（王志宏总编辑）and more.
The following inter-school competitions will also be held at the book fair: at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Exhibition Hall 401 - 402. It is the first public exhibition to be held at the newly-renovated convention and exhibition centre.
Famous illusionist Andy Kwok, who is mentor to world renowned magician Liu Qian, will wow audiences with his magic show. Andy, a pioneer in his trade, is one of the most influential illusionists in the region. He has provided technical knowledge to several notable Hong Kong films such as ‘God of Gamblers’, ‘Winner takes it all’ and ‘Shanghai Grand’. He has been featured on TV shows in Taiwan and China.
From Singapore, Mel & Joe, stalwarts of the local music scene since the 1970’s, will entertain the visitors. From the early days of Talentime and the black-and-white broadcasts of RTS ( Radio Television Singapore) to their glorious heydays with one of Singapore's top bands, Gypsy, they continue to perform with a passion.
Visitors who spend $20 at the Fair will be entitled to a lucky dip and stand a chance to win attractive prizes. While stocks last.
