SPH wins five awards at Asian Digital Media Awards 2012

Singapore, 29 November 2012 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) won a total of five awards at the Asian Digital Media Awards 2012 organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in conjunction with the fourth Digital Media Asia Conference. The results were announced last night in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Asian Digital Media Awards recognise
publishers who had adopted digital media as part of their total product offer to meet the major changes in how people consume news and information. The competition is open to all publishers in Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

The Straits Times Online (
www.straitstimes.com) won a Gold in the Best in Online Media Award - Newspaper Website category, the second time the website has won in this category. The online version of SPH’s flagship English newspaper The Straits Times impressed the international panel of judges with its use of print, online, social media and mobile platforms to reach out to a growing audience with compelling and engaging content. Hong Kong's South China Morning Post also won a joint Gold in the same category.

Mr Felix Soh, Digital Media Editor of SPH’s English and Malay Newspapers Division, said: "The award is an affirmation of our integration model by an outside, independent panel of judges. The integration of content in the Straits Times Online website is the quality we cited in our entry submission. We showed how the ST Online website integrates Stomp's citizen journalism and RazorTV's multimedia with the news and other visual content on the site. Kudos to the team for the imagination, creativity and hard work that they invested in the product."

SPH won two awards in the
Best in Cross Media Award - Cross Media Advertising category, reinforcing the fact that SPH is the most innovative company in the region when it comes to cross media marketing. The award honours a publisher’s ability to offer added value to its advertisers, readers and users through the use of publishing or advertising on a range of media platforms.

The Straits Times’ reader engagement programme, named
Straits Times Appreciate Readers (STAR), won bronze in the category, while SPH’s online jobs portal STJobs took the Silver.

The Straits Times held a series of activities to engage its readers, including holding a major concert at the newly opened Gardens by the Bay which featured performers such as Korean girl group 4 Minute, American rock band Boys Like Girls and award-winning Singaporean singer-songwriter Tanya Chua. The STAR event attracted a crowd of more than 30,000 people.

Mr Warren Fernandez, Editor of The Straits Times, said: "We are happy to have won recognition for our efforts to integrate our newsroom and deliver content across platforms. This is an on-going process, and this award will spur us on."

Since its soft launch in March 2012,
STJobs has garnered close to 10 million page views, 2 million visitors monthly and more than 93,000 Facebook fans. STJobs employed the use of print, digital and other media in their marketing campaign and successfully increased their reach.

Besides STJobs, SPH’s online property portal
STProperty also did well and won a Gold in theBest in Mobile Media Award category. This award honours the best and most innovative services offered by news publishers on a mobile platform.

In its efforts to extensively reach and engage property seekers and agents, STProperty developed an iPhone and iPad application, which made resources and information property more accessible to users and facilitated users who were buying, selling or renting a property.

Launched on 15 August this year, the application works on a geo-locater (GPS system), allowing property seekers to search for information on properties near their current location. The application garnered more than 16,000 downloads in just two weeks, as reported by iTunes Connect.
