Third batch of Singapore Hawker Masters to be announced at Asian Masters Gala Dinner

Chairman of TungLok Group Andrew Tjioe will be presented with the Asian Masters ICON Award

Singapore, 26 November, 2012 – On Wednesday, 28 November, The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao will be announcing the much-awaited results of the Singapore Hawker Masters 2012 during the Asian Masters Gala Dinner, which will be held at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore.

Asian Masters will also be presenting Mr Andrew Tjioe, Executive Chairman of TungLok Group, with the Asian Masters ICON Award

Mr Tjioe and the six new Hawker Masters will receive their awards from Guest-of-Honour Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-At-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Singapore Hawker Masters, now into its third year, is an annual search for the best hawkers in various categories. Hawker Masters for different categories will be awarded each year. This year, the categories are Lontong, Indian Rojak, Carrot Cake (Black), Prawn Noodle (Soup), Bak Kut Teh and Yong Tau Foo.

The search for this year’s Masters kicked off in August, where over 10,000 nominations were received from the public. In September, top nominees from individual categories were listed in The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao for public voting. Over 14,000 readers cast their votes to determine the three finalists in each category.

The search culminated in October when a panel of eight judges visited the finalists’ stalls to decide who would be named a Singapore Hawker Master.

Last year, the search for a Hawker Master in the Bak Kut Teh category did not result in a winner being named. The panel tried again this year and was successful in identifying one finally.

The panel of judges included Professor Tommy Koh; Mr Dennis Wee, Chairman of Dennis Wee Group; Ms Violet Oon, food consultant and restaurateur; Ms Tan Hsueh Yun, Food Editor of The Straits Times and The Sunday Times; Mr Wong Ah Yoke, Executive Sub-Editor, The Straits Times Life!; Ms Tan Pin Yen, correspondent, Lianhe Zaobao zbNOW and Features Editor of ZbBz, and Mr Marcus Yeo Chuan Liang, correspondent, Lianhe Zaobao. The panel was accompanied by a different guest judge for each category.

Professor Koh said: "Our hawker food is a precious component of Singapore's identity and heritage. I thank The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao for recognising the best of our hawker chefs in this annual competition."

Asian Masters ICON Award

The second recipient of the Asian Masters ICON Award, Mr Andrew Tjioe is recognised as a trend setter in the Chinese dining scene. He started his first restaurant in 1984 and through the years, he has introduced innovative and modern Chinese dining concepts with his restaurants Chinois and My Humble House. Since then, TungLok group has been listed on the Singapore stock exchange and now boasts a stable of 45 restaurants around the world.

Mr Tjioe has also contributed tremendously to the local food and beverage industry as the current President of the Restaurant Association of Singapore (RAS) and a Director of the Singapore Hotel and Tourism Education Centre or SHATEC.

The Asian Masters ICON Award was inaugurated in 2011 with the aim to recognise and pay tribute to personalities who have made significant contributions to the local food and beverage industry and changed Singapore’s dining landscape. Mr Desmond Lim, Chairman of the Les Amis Group, was the inaugural recipient of this award.

Asian Masters is a month-long celebration of Asia's cuisine, culture and lifestyle organised by Sphere Exhibits, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).
