AsiaOne wins prestigious international award

Singapore, 12 November 2012 – AsiaOne, Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) news and lifestyle portal, was awarded the top spot in the Best Online Media Advertising/Media Campaign category at the prestigious 2012 EPPY Awards.

It is the only Singapore and Asian news portal to score a win at the Awards.

In addition, six websites from SPH's English and Malay Newspapers Division (EMND) were finalists in 10 categories of the Awards. This is the highest number of finalists for any media group in the world.

The 2012 EPPY Awards, which honours the best media-affiliated websites across various categories, is organised by Editor & Publisher magazine, a prestigious monthly journal which covers all aspects of the newspaper industry.

Other winners in the 2012 EPPY Awards include industry giants such as Cable News Network (CNN), Bloomberg News, Financial Times (FT), Associated Press (AP), and celebrity news portal TMZ.

The EPPY Awards is judged by more than 60 industry experts and media specialists from the business and academic sectors. It is now in its 17th year and has broadened its scope to keep up with the fluid Internet industry. More than 400 entries representing over 200 websites are received by the organisers in a typical year.

Categories are judged on criteria such as design, ease of use, comprehensiveness and timeliness, with special attention to interactivity. Entries are judged on its own merits within a particular category.

AsiaOne won the award for its
Adventure Race 4 project, an island-wide treasure hunt which saw participants deciphering clues to reach various pit stops and taking part in different challenges.

AsiaOne's innovative use of various media platforms to promote the event garnered the win. It used an integrated strategy which harnessed the use of print media, online websites, micro-sites, out-of-home advertising, radio, mobile apps and social networks to drum up publicity and exposure for the event.

AsiaOne YourHealth was a finalist in the Best Redesign/Relaunch category while AsiaOne Relax was a finalist in the Best Travel Website category.

The Straits Times Online was a finalist in six categories, namely the Best News Website, Best Daily Newspaper Website, Best Home Page, Best Overall Website Design, Best Redesign/Relaunch and Best Online Advertising/Marketing Campaign categories.

Stomp was a finalist in the Best Crowd Sourcing/Citizen Journalism category while RazorTV was a finalist in the Best News Video category.

This latest honour adds to the recent haul of awards won by AsiaOne. It won a Silver award in the 2012 Annual W3 Awards for its education portal Edvantage. Its iPhone app was also named one of the most "highly commended" digital news destinations (mobile or app) at the 2012 Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers' Association (PANPA) Awards.

Mr Adrian Tay, Editor of AsiaOne, said the EPPY award is testament to AsiaOne's effectiveness in bringing results to advertisers.

"This shows our commitment in coming up with effective marketing campaigns that target advertisers' desired audiences. We want to go the extra mile in creating highly effective advertising that harnesses the power of online advertising."

Mr Jeffrey Low, General Manager, Nikon Singapore, said: "Nikon is proud to be part of the Asia Adventure Race for the past two years. We’ve seen the campaign grow with success each year with more teams participating to complete the race.

“Nikon Singapore is glad to be able to contribute to their fun and excitement by equipping them with Nikon cameras to capture every moment of their race. And this was made possible with the strong team at AsiaOne who piloted the event.”

Ms Amy Lim, General Manager, 313@somerset, said: "313@somerset is proud to have played a part in the AsiaOne Adventure Race 2012. As one of the pitstops for the race, we were able to showcase the good range of shops the mall has to offer to the contestants. A job well done to the AsiaOne Network team!”

Mr Willy Tan, Assistant Vice-President, Strategic Development, Interactive Business Unit, SPH, said that it was a great honour to have won at the EPPY awards, competing amongst internationally renowned media-affiliated websites.

“For the AsiaOne's Adventure Race to have won Best Online Advertising/Marketing Campaign is testament of our constant pursuit to innovate and stand out with ideas that excite both our readers as well as our advertising partners."
