- Dr Kumaran Rasappan is the first Singapore-born Indian to scale Mount Everest
Singapore, 20 October 2012 - The second tabla! Community Champion Award was presented to Dr Kumaran Rasappan today at a ceremony held at the Singapore Expo in conjunction with the inaugural Deepavali Mela 2012.
Dr Kumaran, a medical officer in the orthopaedic department of Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), was presented with the award by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Law K. Shanmugam, who was the guest-of-honour at the event.
The award also comes with a cash donation of $10,000 from the State Bank of India and it will go to the charity of Dr Kumaran's choice -- the Tan Tock Seng Hospital Community Charity Fund. The $10,000 cheque was presented by the bank's country head and CEO Anil Kishora. The bank is a supporter of the tabla! Community Champion Award.
Dr Kumaran is best known for being the first Singapore-born Indian to scale Mount Everest. He achieved that feat earlier this year and along with his mountaineering efforts, he has also raised $35,000 for Tan Tock Seng Hospital Community Charity Fund so far. Despite his tight work commitment, Dr Kumaran, 28, has managed to spend considerable time giving motivational talks at the prison school to help inmates overcome their personal uncertainties and help them progress in their studies.
He has also given motivational talks to primary, secondary and JC students and at SINDA's step tuition centres where students from low income families attend classes.
Accepting the award, Dr Kumaran said: "The award was most unexpected but I humbly appreciate and accept it. I am nominating the TTSH Community Charity Fund as my chosen beneficiary to receive the $10,000 amount attached to this award as part of my climbing and post-climbing fund raising effort called 'No Mountain Too High', which is for the needy patients of TTSH."
Dr Kumaran added: "I would like to thank my family and in particular my fiancée, Dr Gayathri Nadarajan, for being so supportive of my climbing efforts and for being part of my community work both locally and overseas. I would also like to thank TTSH for being supportive of my fund raising efforts and working together in making a difference in the lives of the needy patients.”
Earlier, Chairman of Tamil Murasu Mr S. Chandra Das welcomed the audience of around 150 members from the Indian community, including business leaders and professionals from all walks of life at the Signapore Expo.
