SPH receives Distinguished Patron of the Arts Award for 20 consecutive years

Singapore, 19 July 2012 - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) was the first and only company to be honoured with the Distinguished Patron of the Arts award for 20 consecutive years today.

SPH was presented with the award by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, at an award ceremony at the Goodman Arts Centre. The Distinguished Patron of the Arts award, conferred by the National Arts Council, is the highest honour accorded to an organisation in support of the arts.

SPH's major arts sponsorships include the popular SPH Gift of Music series, which brings quality music to the masses at the heartlands, shopping malls, campuses and parks. SPH is also the Silver Anniversary Sponsor of the Singapore Dance Theatre since 2008.

The SPH Foundation also won the Friend of the Arts Award. It launched the SPH Foundation Arts Fund in 2011 to purchase tickets for the underprivileged to enjoy arts productions, as well as to help local arts groups to reach out to a wider audience. Close to 7,000 beneficiaries have enjoyed an arts performance with the help of the Fund. The Foundation is also a Company Sponsor of Singapore Repertory Theatre's The Little Company.

Ms Ginney Lim, SPH's General Counsel and Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications, and General Manager of the SPH Foundation, said: "We are proud to be the first and only company to be honoured with the Distinguished Patron of the Arts award for 20 consecutive years. As Singapore's leading media company, SPH is committed to support the local arts scene by helping our artists to achieve excellence and bringing quality arts performances to more Singaporeans. Through the SPH Foundation Arts Fund, we also create opportunities for the less fortunate in our society to enjoy local arts productions."

SPH Unionworks' Chinese language radio station, UFM 100.3, received a Friend of the Arts Award this year. It has been supporting local theatre groups in the publicity of their various productions.

At a separate award ceremony held two days ago on 17 July 2012,
SPH's bilingual news and entertainment portal omy.sg clinched the Arts Supporter Award for its online publicity of productions by local theatre companies.
