33 awarded SPH and SPH Foundation scholarships

Singapore, 16 July 2012 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SPH Foundation today presented a total of 33 scholarships at the annual scholarship awards presentation ceremony held at the SPH News Centre auditorium.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, presented the SPH Journalism Scholarships and the SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships to the recipients. Mr Alan Chan, Chief Executive Officer of SPH, presented scholarships to the children of SPH employees and newspaper vendors.

This year, nine outstanding young men and women received the SPH Journalism Scholarships, while nine others were awarded the SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships. In addition, there were 13 scholars who were children of SPH staff and another two who were children of newspaper vendors.

One of the nine SPH Journalism Scholars was a recipient of the SPH-MDA Scholarship under the Media Education Scheme (MES) in partnership with the Media Development Authority (MDA). The Media Education Scheme was launched by MDA in 2003 to develop media professionals and future industry leaders. It supports local students and media practitioners in full-time media related degree programmes at reputable overseas or Singapore universities. In 2012, MDA reviewed the scheme and now offers scholarships with media companies.

SPH's efforts in building an effective team of human capital was recently recognised by the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI). SPH won the most number of awards, including the prestigious Corporate HR Champion award, at this year’s Singapore HR Awards.

The SPH Foundation has awarded the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships to outstanding students pursuing languages at local tertiary institutions annually since 2006. These bond-free scholarships are targeted at helping deserving students from low-income families fund their language studies degree programmes at local universities.
