CATS Classified holds first-of-its-kind event in Singapore to encourage active ageing and end-of-life preparations

Singapore, 30 April 2012 – Our golden years can be truly golden only if we continue to engage wholeheartedly with life – taking steps to remain fit and healthy, maintaining positive contact with friends and family, learning new skills, exploring new pastimes, and keeping an open mind.

To promote active ageing in the silver generation, and encourage open-mindedness in people of all ages about end-of-life planning, Singapore Press Holdings' CATS Classified is holding the inaugural Life Matters exhibition on May 5 and 6 at the Suntec Convention Hall 402.

Ms Tan Su-Lin, Vice-President, CATS Classified, said: “The silver generation will form a big proportion of Singapore’s population in the years to come. With growing affluence, better nutrition, regular exercise and advanced health care, many are still extremely active and leading full lives even after retirement. 60 is the new 50, and soon, it may be the new 40. They have the means and they want options and ideas. CATS Classified, working with our sponsors and advertisers, wants to give these older individuals the choices and ideas they seek through our Life Matters event.”

At the exhibition, there will be booths where various organisations will be offering items and services to help older individuals lead the fullest life possible: health products, will-writing services, hearing aids, holiday packages, traditional massage treatments, beauty services and more. Exhibitors also include funeral directors and a columbarium, which can advise people of all ages about the practicalities of end-of-life planning.

Visitors can watch the semi-finals and final of the “Golden Voices” singing competition for 50-year-olds and above. See how 20 contestants (from out of 160 applicants) compete against one another. Find out who takes home the top prize of $2,000 cash and a trophy. Watch special guest performances by Rahimah Rahim and Wong Kee Meng (黄清元) after the final on 6 May.

An unusual final for the “Fill This Space” coffin-art competition will also be on-going. Observe 23 artists on 5 May as they create interesting and thought-provoking designs for coffins. The top prize is $1,000 cash. The three winning designs will be used to laminate coffins provided by Singapore Casket, one of the sponsors for Life Matters. The three coffins will then be donated to hospices affiliated with Singapore Casket.

A display of photographs submitted for the “Shoot For Life” photography contest will be put up at the event for the public to vote for their favourite images. The winner of the contest gets $1,000 in cash.

Visitors may also attend talks: "Gastrointestinal Health for the Middled Aged & Elderly" (in Mandarin) by Dr Tan Hong Leng (5 May, 11am), "Ageing Gracefully with TCM Herbs" by Chua Yu Chun (6 May, 11am), “Estate Planning” presented by Singapore Casket (2pm, May 5 & 6), and “Priorities @ Retirement” by Mr Tan Kin Lian (3pm, May 5 & 6).
