Singapore, 16 March 2012 - Poker, politics and puppets dominate the headlines at this year’s 12th Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards 2012. The annual event that honours the best theatre professionals in Singapore today will be held at the cafe bar 15 Minutes on 19 March 2012. Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Dr Yaacob Ibrahim will be the guest-of-honour.
The theatre productions with the most nominations were Dealer’s Choice, a high-stakes poker drama by Pangdemonium! Productions with six nods, followed by Turn By Turn We Turn, a sweeping epic about a puppet theatre troupe by The Finger Players with five. The political drama that unfolded in real life in Singapore last year was also perfect fodder for the stage. The sold-out political plays Cooling Off Day (Wild Rice) and Fear Of Writing (TheatreWorks) received four and five nominations respectively.
These four productions are all in the running for the coveted Production Of The Year, together with two dark horses - Decimal Points: 4.44 (Cake Theatrical Productions), film-maker Brian Gothong Tan’s debut in directing for the stage in a genre-bending production, and The Good, The Bad And The Sholay (Checkpoint Theatre & NUS Stage), a heartwarming coming-of-age comedy written by university student Shiv Tandan.
The awards are judged by a seven-member panel, comprising theatre academic Dr K.K. Seet, provost of Lasalle College of the Arts Venka Purushothaman, online arts journal The Flying Inkpot co-editor Kenneth Kwok, as well as arts reviewers from The Business Times, Lianhe Zaobao and The Straits Times – Natalie Koh, Chew Boon Leong, Adeline Chia and Corrie Tan.
Members of the media are cordially invited to the awards ceremony for this year’s Life! Theatre Awards.
