Singapore, 13 February 2012 - This year's SPH Gift of Music concert series by leading media group Singapore Press Holdings will offer a diversity of music genres.
Apart from its usual showcase of classical music, pop, jazz, rock and opera, the free concert series will be adding world music, anime and video game soundtracks to its expanding repertoire. A total of 25 concerts will be organised under the banner of SPH Gift of Music this year.
Kicking off the series in February will be performances by two wind orchestras - The Philharmonic Winds and the Singapore Wind Symphony. The Philharmonic Winds will present a special Valentine's Day concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall on 14 February while the Singapore Wind Symphony Youth Winds, which is partnering the SPH Gift of Music for the first time, will perform an exciting selection of soundtracks from Japanese anime and video games on 25 February at COSFEST, an annual event popular with Cosplayers.
Coming up next will be the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) in March. The national orchestra, led by Associate Conductor Darrell Ang, will be playing easy-listening classics at Temasek Polytechnic, accompanied by young violinist Lanabel Teo, second-prize winner of the National Music Competition in 2011.
Other highlights this year include a world music concert at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre in April featuring a tapestry of world music genres such as flamenco and Irish music. Singer/Song Writer Brandon Lee, a newcomer who was the opening act for international pop band Simple Plan's recent concert in Singapore, will perform with his own band in June when he launches his new album. The Esplanade, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, will bring together some local acts in a celebration concert in October.
Popular concerts such as Singapore Lyric Opera's Opera in the Park, the SCO Community Series by Singapore Chinese Orchestra and Jazz On the Roof with Singapore-based British jazz artist Greg Lyons, will also return to wow local audiences.
Launched in 2005 as a gift to the nation to celebrate Singapore's 40th anniversary, the SPH Gift of Music series has been entertaining Singapore audiences in the heartlands, school campuses, parks, concert halls and shopping malls. Thousands of Singaporeans from all walks of life have enjoyed the free concerts.
